Raccoons are on the fourth trophic level of the food web. (Trophic Level-each level on the food web and food chain) Each animal is classified as some sort of consumer. It just so happens that a raccoon is an omnivore. This means that the raccoon eats both plants and animals. Raccoons use the abiotic factors in the environment to their advantage.…
Animal Endangerment in Brazil Brazil is home to some of the world’s most diverse wildlife, with over 2,900 animal species occupying in the Amazon rain forest. (Animals) These animals serve an important role in the world’s ecosystem, but are quickly becoming endangered. Although the extinction of animals is a natural occurrence, human activities has quicken their rate of becoming extinct. From early European colonists and settlers, to deforestation, and to animal smuggling, the number of species in the Brazilian rain forests are rapidly decreasing, but with the endangerment of animals, comes the formation of organizations that are making an effort to help conserve the rainforests where these animals live and limit the factors which are putting…
Fort Stewart Georgia has 278,000 acres of manageable timber lands which consists of most the major species found in the southeast. Everything from Longleaf, Slash, Loblolly, and Pond pine to hardwood species such as Sweetgum, Blackgum, and multiple species of Oaks. But what most people don’t know is that some of these species were not native to this particular area. At Ft. Stewart Forestry we have two main goals.…

The cane toad is an opportunistic predator in which they take advantage of any vulnerable prey. They are omnivores feeding on either plants or animals, both invertebrates and vertebrates, with their diet consisting of small insects like beetles, spiders, termites and ants as well as small snakes, mammals, birds, and household scraps (Department of Environment and Primary Industries, 2014). The invasion of the cane toad has been successful due to the few natural and carnivorous predators which can tolerate the species ability to breed quickly, voracious appetite and poisonous characteristics (Shine R. , 2006). Their omnivorous approach are features of species on a typical 3rd trophic level and are generally predated by carnivores. This can be seen in the Figure 2.1 which breaks down the location of producers, herbivores, omnivores and carnivores in a typical food web.…
This slight adaptation in omnivores’ gastrointestinal tract allows omnivores to properly digest both cellulose and animal products. In contrast, herbivorous animals thrive solely on plant matter. An herbivore has a much more compassionate mindset than seen in carnivores or omnivores. Herbivores do not desire, nor are they equipped with the raw abilities, to slaughter another…

Every year, many plants and animal species are killed, or even put to the brink of extinction, due to Amazon Deforestation. “Forests are complex ecosystems that affect almost every species on the planet. When they are degraded, it can set off a devastating chain of events both locally and around the world.” (Bradford) By deforesting the amazon, many animals are losing their homes and food sources.…
The problems caused by invasive species are, of course, not something limited to the United States. Countries on the other side of the world have similar problems, including Australia. In the article Chronic Effects of an Invasive Species on an Animal Community, published by the Ecological Society of America in 2017, Sean Doody and colleagues discuss the effects of the cane toad on the ecosystem in parts of Australia. The cane toad has had a major effect on the ecosystem by causing massive damage to the populations of top predators, specifically 3 species of monitor lizards. Although the short-term damage to these predator populations was already harmful and the potential effects understood, Doody and colleagues sought to understand through…
The historical norms of masculinity that led to the eradication of wolves in Yellowstone was the belief that man is a righteous hunter and wolves are seen as an evil hunter. This belief arose from the early American settler’s culture of fear of the wild creatures that they assumed inhabited the “wilderness”. The presence of wolves symbolized one 's existence with in the wildness. As such, it was long believed that wolves were an explicit representation of the wilderness. The early American settlers believed that the wolves were wilderness therefore wherever the wolves were it was declared to be wilderness.…

Jose Padilla Debate and Speech Period 4 Ms. Douglass The meaning of Deforestation “is the permanent destruction of forests in order to make the land available for other uses.” Permanent, millions of acres of rainforests permanently destroyed, and we can’t replace those millions of acres as fast as we destroy them. We as humans take rainforests for granted, we only think of them a resources for paper but they are useful for so many other things. They are homes for many species, they keep the ecosystem balanced, and for some people their food.…
Areas that have been effected by overconsumption and the conflict this has on nature and society The natural world has fallen victim to the anthropocentric ideal of evolution as the natural world has been overconsumed by society in order for global development. Cronon (1995) states that natures worth is measured and judged by civilisation, claiming that society produces a dualistic world of humans and nature being placed at opposite ends of the spectrum. This ideal is ironic seeing as development cannot be achieved without nature, and nature cannot be sustained and conserved without the protection of society. Cronon (1995) displays the false truths of society as we live in an urbanized world although beliefs are held that our natural home…
