Tap Water Cleanliness

Discussion
The cleanliness of tap water is determined by comparing many different factors of the water’s composition to the acceptable or ideal levels that have been set for “healthy” water. The water samples from each city show that the tap water remains within an acceptable range. For instance, the acceptable level for Nitrate in water is 10 ppm, a maximum level enforced by the Environmental Protection Agency, and each city did not exceed that amount with the highest level being 5 ppm in one sample of Royal Palm Beach and one sample of Palm Beach Gardens (“Basic Information about Nitrate”, n.d.). Nitrite, which usually occurs in water due to runoff from fertilizers or leaching from septic tanks and sewage, is also limited to 1 ppm, which none of the samples exceed 0.5 ppm individually, or 0.2 ppm on average (“Basic Information about Nitrite”, n.d.).

Free chlorine, as the residual amount of chlorine left over after disinfection of water, is recommended to have levels between 0.3 and 0.5 ppm so that water can remain clean and healthy to use (Wagenet, Heidekamp, & Lemley, 2005). However, in most cities the majority of samples had free chlorine levels less than the recommended range, except for North Palm Beach which remained at 0.5 ppm in all samples. This suggests that an adequate amount of chlorine may not be being added to the tap water in the other cities, lowering its

Agricultural bacteria, fertilizers and manure that is distributed throughout fields causes a rise in the groundwater’s concentration that exceeds the max containment level for intake. These excess levels of nitrate found in water are extremely hard on the human body, and can be lethal in infants (Holme). Mixing water with formula to feed a baby is a perfect example of how nitrites can enter an infant’s immature digestive system. In 1999, a 3-week old in Wisconsin suffered from methaemoglobinaemia, also known as “blue baby disease”.…

Wastewater from hand basins is more pollutant than bath or shower greywater. It was further revealed that soap is the most common chemical contaminant found in bathroom greywater and other common contaminants are from shampoo, hair dyes, toothpaste and cleaning chemicals. All of these contaminants are believed to adversely affect land applications systems and are difficult to remove from the wastewater. Biocidal soaps have little effect on reducing the bacterial load in greywater. Laundry grey water.…

There are many possible errors that could’ve occurred during the lab. Some of these errors could’ve been miscalculating of the mass of the water, getting the wrong mass of the metal, and using tap water. Getting the wrong mass of either the water or the metal would throw off the calculation. The use of tap water could’ve had other materials in the water. This would’ve thrown off the joules calculations because water was only accounted for.…

According to this article, the tap water in Flint, Michigan became toxic due to the governor’s office and the state Department of Environmental Quality. They were aware of how toxic the water of the Flint river is but decided to ignore the issue and did not treat the water properly. One of the reasons of why they decided to to switch their water supply from Lake Huron to Flint river was because Flint was declared to be in a financial state of emergency and so they took a budgetary control. Making the switch of water supply was going to save them some money but no matter the circumstances, they knew how harmful that water supply was therefore, they must have purposefully harmed these people for some greater reason than for just saving themselves…

However, it is only adequate if the sample collected represents the characteristics of the whole population to make the generalization of data valid. The scheme used by Sally targets the areas surrounding the pristine waters near the drinking water inlets and sewage outfall (Nold, 2002). The scheme could be modified to include the waters in a given distance (for example two kilometers into the sea) to show sharp contrasts in the presence of bacteria in the water. The concentration of the bacteria shows reducing patterns as one move away from the pristine waters, but it is not clear about the limit to which they…

The use of chlorine has many benefits without a doubt probably the most recognized use is for swimming pools to keep the water clean and clear of disease producing organisms. Chlorine has also been used as a poisonous gas in the past wars. It has been "classified as a choking agent. Basis-For my science experiment I will be using live clams to filter water and I will use tap water. I was inspired by a previous science fair project where someone tested filters against a clams. In my project, however, I will test if clams filter out vitamins, and then use that water, and tap water, to see which is more healthy to the plant life. If possible, this discovery will help farming by bringing out the nutrients in waste.in the end I will see of my tap water is more effective than the clam filtered water. I want to see if the clam filters out vitamins essential to plant growth.…

Water is Florida’s best natural resource in the Sunshine State simply because it surrounds all of Florida and it is what draws people to our state. There are two big beautiful oceans that surround the state of Florida. There are also several lakes, rivers, springs and other bodies of water. Although, the biggest problem in Florida is the pollution going into Florida’s waterways; everyone has a role on the pollution. Homeowner’s are a part of the problem because they are trying to keep their lawns green and lush by using fertilizer and pesticides that eventually run into some type of body of water (Call and Stephenson).…

Virtually everyone who works in a scientific field will ultimately have to deal, in one way or another, with the production of healthy clean water and the key concepts to cooking food correctly. The importance of keeping our drinking water clean is not stressed enough. There are distributions of harmful components that are put into our waters on a day to day basis (and the distribution that we speak of is nasty pathogens that are commonly found in human/animal bodily waste). The majority of the clean waters in Virginia is by the help of HRSD (Hampton Roads Sanitation District). HRSD is known for their different projects and successful efforts in working with the sanitation and cleaning of water throughout VA. They essentially take all of the…
