L’HEURE BLUE

“Tanzanite is the most beautiful blue stone to be discovered in 2000 years” – Harry Pratt, president of Tiffany & Co.

Born to the flames, such is the beauty of this stone that resides on the throne of the modern mystical. The radiant blue sky has faltered for it has met its nemeses in a mere stone, born in only one place on earth, Tanzania. As any curious animal would, men stumbled upon this marvel of a gem in the 1967, owing to its vibrant color it posed as another one of the marvels, Sapphire. Although at first disappointment and despair struck as and when the lab results showed otherwise but nothing could stop Tanzanite from taking its rightful place in the gem kingdom.

Interactions between outside observers and wearers of a cultural signifier often lead to a “mutual othering”, predicated on the acknowledgement of existing cultural difference between both parties.1 In the case of jade jewelry, members are easily recognized within their cultural in-group by simply possessing and bearing a jade piece. However, whereas wearers of jade inherently understand its cultural significance, outside observers must interpret this significance in accordance to any prior knowledge they have of jade.2 Of course, whatever conclusions observers reach about the jade piece, and therefore by extension the wearer, are subject to personal biases and stigmas. Since the beginning of time, art has always been an integral contributor toward recording the history, culture, and traditions of civilizations. Archaeologists have been interpreting the history of civilizations through art, especially sculptures. In ancient Iraq, Mesopotamia, the Sumerians represented their sophisticated relationships between the people and the gods through making clay sculptures (Carr, 2016). While in ancient Egypt, the old kingdom's art was mainly represented in limestone sculptures that emphasized rituals of kings and gods, as well as the dead services of common and elite people in the society (Smith, 1941). This paper compares and contrasts the sculpture of The Royal Acquaintances Memi and Sabu with the Statue of Gudea, taking in consideration "the effect the intended purpose or function has on the…

Ancient Egyptian Pottery The ancient Egyptians were one of the first civilizations in the world to make pottery. They made these pots (as well as vases, canopic jars, etc...) out of a red-brown clay that was called Nile silt ware. Remember the pottery I am talking about was or the “civilians” of the time, not for royalty. So, it stands to reason that it would look like a regular clay pot/vase and not a glamorous gold one that was put in the tombs of the pharaohs and other royals.…
