Even know as a Cho Dan Bo, the assessments I did felt like I was taking the literal exam even though it wasn’t. To be honest when I first had my Blue belt I did not believe that it was important to me whether I received my black belt or not. To me it felt just like being only promoted to another rank. Although when I learned what is required to be a Black Belt and the exams I needed to test for in order to receive it, not only that, I knew how important it meant to me, my father and mother as well since they encouraged me to join Tang Soo Do, me and my dad’s favorite Martial arts movie was “Legend of The Dragon”. To both of us we knew that Bruce Lee was a great Martial Artist and that most of his moves are not stunt double actions but he himself does the moves, of course the moves he does are a mix of different types of martial arts. Though there is one thing that I have also remembered Master West saying when someone in our dojo received a Black Belt, he said that’s this is only the beginning of a new journey to reach greater heights and that await furthermore and more. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t any more exams to reach the higher rank of black belt, no there will always be exams every time to know if you were prepared and know everything you need to know to pass to the other rank. Now reaching a Grandmaster Rank would take a long time but it means something special because that shows you that you put all your effort and never stopped at being a Black Belt. To me my instructor Master Patrick West has meant much to me because without his help and guidance of reaching to the point of testing for Black Belt I would not take it and would still be a Cho Dan Bo. When I first met him he seemed a bit serious and strict which kind of scared me but really, he was a funny, happy, and strict master and that was fine with me because Tang Soo Do is a fun and serious training to show us how to defend ourselves from danger.
