Taking Bullshit Argumentative Essay

In 1986, Harry Frankfurt wrote an essay, On Bullshit, which many years later, in 2005, evolved into a book. Since then, an article titled, Taking Bulls**t Seriously, by Paul Babbitt has debuted, arguing that “BS is not lying but instead an indifference to truth and a misrepresentation of the self -- and worse than lying.” By the statement being made, Babbitt is making a claim that he very well believes that bullshitting is in fact much worse than lying. He does a good job at supporting his argument through rhetoric, hypocrisy, and propaganda. Overall the article argues that bullshit is wrong for many reasons and in many ways such as, that bullshit is deceiving in more ways than one, it is a fabrication of yourself, and it “dumbs us down” as …show more content…
“Ambrose Bierce defined the hypocrite as "one who, professing virtues he does not respect, secures the advantage of seeming to be what he despises."” (Babbitt, Taking Bulls**t Seriously). The hypocrite is one who is not always seen as a liar but often misrepresents himself. Throughout the article, it was mentioned many times that the people who are most known to be BSers are politicians, pundits, and even academics who study politics. The essence of hypocrisy is misdirection and in politics, the main goal is to appeal to the voters and their views. Babbitt says “in politics, BS is the normal manner of speaking. We tolerate it, even celebrate it.” Bullshit is known to be very common in politics whereas lying is not, but honestly, aren’t they both just as bad? I personally think it is extremely wrong that the people we vote into office, the people who are supposed to be our experts in certain subjects, and even some of our educators are those people that are filling our heads with complete and utter BS, literally. “BS derives its effectiveness from the way it says nothing while appearing to say something profound” (Babbitt, Taking Bulls**t Seriously). I find this to be most common in politics. Each new election year, politicians make so many promises and talk about all the …show more content…
Everyone can agree that dishonesty is a terrible characteristic to have but intellectual dishonesty is even worse. This is “the advocacy of a position known to be false. An argument which is misused to advance an agenda or to reinforce one's deeply held beliefs in the face of overwhelming evidence contrary.” (Urban Dictionary) As stated previously, BSing gives off a misrepresentation of oneself. Since intellectual dishonesty is a form of lying, this does the same. Propaganda is a strategy often used to support one's’ BS. It is a persuasive matter that is used to attempt to influences one's behaviors and thinking often rooted in fact. But the thing that makes propaganda so effective in BS is that it treats truth as

Chris Hedges writes,” Political leaders who use the tools of mass propaganda to create a sense of faux intimacy with citizens, no longer need to be competent, sincere or honest.” I agree withe political leaders needing to be needed to use mass propaganda to to create a sense of faux intimacy with citizens, but I don’t agree that just because they are skilled in propaganda that it means that they are able to lie and be dishonest. They can’t just be one or the other they have to be both. They need to bring the person in with propaganda and personal connection and they need to tell them why they are truly there for and why they are…

It is therefore important to make clear the difference between a bullshit and a lie. Frankfurt thinks that a bullshitter is a more insidious threat to the values of truth because it is hard to identify or pinpoint the truth. A liar, on the other hand, knows what the truth is but is more concerned with keeping people away from the truth. So this in itself shows a certain respect for the value of truth, because that lie can be uncovered. Bullshit is so vague and holds no account of responsibility, hence why Frankfurt believes it is more harmful than a…

In "On Bullshit in Cultural Policy Practice and Research: Notes from the British Case" Professor Eleonora Belfiore explores bullshit in politics and why it is prevalent particularly in politics. Belfiore begins with a differentiation between bullshit and lying, "...lies a bullshitter who is intentionally misleading his or her interlocutors so as to pursue his or her own interests" (38). This is the main difference between lies and bullshit, she claims where lies are unintentionally deceiving, bullshit is intentional, leading to it being more detrimental to those on the side being misled. One example of this occurrence is the war on Iraq which led to military involvement based on false information about weapons of mass destruction. Belfiore's…

While using this tactic many politicians are not just laying out the facts for voters to see, they are using personal attacks to make the other side look bad. This has created a wave of concern for voters because they do not understand how they are suppose to see situations like this. Whereas most politicians know that this is just a tactic to win, therefore they do not take these outbursts very seriously even though it is a respect issue within…

The Truth on Lying Everyone in this nation is a liar, which means you are a liar too. According to i09, Americans lie at least once a day, and believe they get away with it most of the time. Unfortunately, BBC claimed in Ethical Guide: Lying, that “ Lying is probably one of the most common wrong acts that we carry out”, which means lying should not be committed, because there is nothing good coming out of it.…

Credibility is more than truth telling, it presupposes that we care about the truth. Liars care about the truth and bullshitters do not. Bullshitters intentionally deceive people. Even if their credibility is not damaged, their disregard for the truth can be more detrimental. For example, social media constantly provides the general public with bullshit and misrepresents current events.…

Deception is most successful when there is a grain of truth blended into the lie. If a large portion of the facts of a lie is perceived as true (or thought to be valid), individuals are more likely to explain away any inconsistencies as they emerge. In a way, individuals are blinded by the deception. Science writer Maria Konnikova notes “We con ourselves as much as [conartists] con us, because we supply the missing links, we tell ourselves the story that we want to hear,” (Hutson, 2016). Con artists use this strategy to mislead and cheat individuals to gain what they want; be it possessions, money or power.…

Molly Gaglione UCWR 110 - 012 Professor Jaffe 4 October 2017 The Use of Rhetoric as a Persuasive Device in “The Ways We Lie” In the world today, lying is something that is seemingly unavoidable. Religious leaders lie to hide illegal crimes committed within the church; athletes lie about use of performance enhancing drugs; news stations lie about the credibility of their reports; the President of the United States even lies about the number of people who attended his inauguration; more commonly, however, an average person will commit an untruth over the course of their daily lives, whether it be necessarily known to them or not. These are the kinds of lies that are explored in Stephanie Ericsson’s “The Ways We Lie.” This article dives into…

In “The Ways We Lie” by Stephanie Ericsson she discusses and breaks down the activity of lying into different kinds of lies. Ericsson goes into great detail of about 10 of them, but there are many more. Some lies are for your peace of mind and maybe still bad for both parties, and some are for the better of someone else’s feelings. Ericsson believes that even if you feel you are perfect, nobody is and still tell lies no matter big or small, we do it and at times are unaware that it is considered a lie. Individuals nowadays get to a point where they are lying and don’t know whether to believe themselves or others.…

A few examples come from the episode “Where my Country Gone” which follows Mr. Garrison, the boys’ teacher, dabble in politics and immigration reform when an influx of Canadian immigrants move to South Park. In the episode, Mr. Garrison himself states, “I may not understand politics, or immigration policies, or the law, or basic ideological concepts, but dammit I understand there are a bunch of Canadians here and I’m gonna do something about it” (Parker, “Country Gone”). This clearly represents bullshit in the sense that Mr. Garrison is not at all informed about how the country is run or how immigration works, yet he continues to believe that he is correct. Even after it is revealed that the reason Canadians are coming to America is to escape a Donald Trump-like president that won on the same ideology of Mr. Garrison and subsequently ruined the country, he continues to proclaim his ideas to be the answers to America’s problems (Parker, “Country Gone”). This shows that Mr. Garrison does not consider reality at all but instead makes statements that he believes to be right and makes him look…

In an interview with Robin Roberts, Robert Feldman, someone who has researched the subject of lies and deception for twenty plus years, said “We do it because it’s easy and because we get away with it and because it helps us in life” (Firestone). The human mind often assists in lying by helping the liar believe that by not telling the truth they are protecting someone else or themselves (Firestone). People are able to put their minds at ease when lying by convincing themselves that it is not that bad and that they are not doing anything wrong (Anonymous). It is not uncommon for people to only share information that they deem “safe” to tell and not tell everything; that is still a lie. It is a lie of omission, which at times is the worst kind of lie (Firestone).…
