Taiga Biome Research Paper

The word Taiga is Russian for forest. The taiga biome is the largest biome in the world besides the ocean. These locations are known to be harshly cold and the climate is hard to adapt to. With miles upon miles of open land and needle tree forests a taiga can be a lonely place to live or visit. I chose this biome due to it being the least known to me. Upon researching the biome I found it very intriguing even though it is a lonely cold space of land. I would like to visit this type of biome to grasp the true experience of being away from most society. It seems like the atmosphere would be completely peaceful and quiet. The taiga is also known as a boreal forest. This name is said to have derived from the Greek god of the north wind. Hence that the boreal forest is located in the Northern region of the world. There are common insects such as ants and mosquitoes. With the most infamous being the spruce bark beetle which were killing the trees in a random epidemic in Yukon. In the aspect of predator vs prey a good example would be the Lynx and the Snowshoe Hare. The snowshoe hare has a bright white coat during the winter for camouflage in the snow and brown during the summer for hiding in the woods. The Lynx is a superb climber and swimmer with great agility and speed. Though the snowshoe hare is agile and small they are good in numbers that help with easy findings for the Lynx. Another great example of predator and prey is the black bear and fish that swim in the rivers throughout the taiga. Fish make easy pickings for the black bear as they generally don’t migrate to extremely far from the river banks and fish are so highly populated. An example of a super predator within the taiga biome would be the grey fox upon the lynx. Although a lynx has superior hearing a pack of wolves may very easily overcome its prey for an easy
