TRICARE is the United States Department of Defense (DOD) Military Healthcare System. TRICARE provides military personnel, both active and retired, along with their dependents, a civilian health benefits. The program also covers survivors and certain former spouses worldwide. Finally, in the same way active duty or retirees become eligible, certain reserve military members and their direct dependents become entitled on the service member 's 60th birthday (DHA 1). Tricare Prime is a health maintenance organization (HMO) that services active duty personnel, retirees from the Active Component, retirees from the Reserve Component age 60 or older, and their eligible family members. Beneficiaries choose a primary care physician (PCP) and for any specialty care outside the scope of their PCP secure referrals and authorizations (DHA 1). The offset for such limitations is a small copayments for each visit (retirees and their families only). There is an annual enrollment fee for Tricare Prime for military retirees and their family members. There is no enrollment fee for active duty military and their family members. Next is Prime Remote, a managed care option available in remote areas in the United States that are usually more than 50 miles from a MTF. There are no enrollment fees or out-of-pocket costs for any type of care as long as received from your PCM or referral. Care received without a referral is subject to point-of-service fees. Prime Overseas, is a managed care option in overseas areas near military hospitals and clinics that also has no fees or costs. Prime Remote Overseas is for designated remote overseas locations Eurasia-Africa, Latin America and Canada, and the Pacific. Again no costs if within network or referred. TRICARE Standard and Extra is a fee-for-service plan available in the United States only. You don 't have to enroll as coverage is automatic as long as you are registered in the Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System (DEERS).
