Syphilis is a sexually transmitted disease, caused by a bacterial infection that usually starts as a painless sore. There are three stages of symptoms in adults. These stages are known as primary, secondary, latent, and late syphilis. Several years ago, it was almost extinct in the United States. Syphilis is on the rise again due to the increase of the number of gay, bisexual, and men who have sex with other men. Having syphilis also increases the chance of developing HIV/AIDS..The first traces of syphilis were found in Western Europe in the late 1400s to the 1500s, but no one really knew what it is. A formal discovery of syphilis was discovered in 1905 by Fritz Schaudinn and Erich Hoffmann. Furthermore, syphilis cases are mainly reported by groups of people from the African American and Hispanic racial background. In 2013, 37.3% of all syphilis cases were found in African Americans,while 19.9% of cases were reported …show more content…
This sore can lead to several consequences if not treated right which includes lots of pain and suffering and ultimately death. I personally think disease can be quite devastating if not treated properly or if the victim’s partner is not notified and they ultimately become inflected. Considering that syphilis can also contribute to having HIV/AIDS, I think more attention should be brought to it. This disease, at the moment, can be considered a threat because while many of the protective measures do help, it is not 100% effective at protecting with syphilis or really any sexually transmitted disease. Also, many of the sores go unnoticed, so many people may not even realize they are inflected with syphilis. Lastly, syphilis recently has been on the rise, so until there is a cure it will never fully go away forever.
