Syphilitic sores, known as a chancre occur mainly on the vagina, anus, lips, mouth or in the rectum. Syphilis transmission can occur during vaginal, anal, or oral sex. Syphilis signs and symptoms can look like many other diseases. However, syphilis typically progresses by stages that can last for weeks, months, or even years. In the primary stage the sores last three to six weeks. If the person infected does not receive adequate treatment, infection progresses to the secondary stage.
