Formation of alcohol from acid catalyzed addition of water to a carbon-carbon double bond is hydration of alkenes. In this experiment norbornene was used as an alkene to lead the formation of the alcohol. The purpose of this experiment was to make and receive weight of norborneol, percent yield and the melting point of the product. Hydration and the opposite reaction of dehydration establish equilibrium between the two competing processes. To complete the reaction of hydration, double bond will require excess water and to complete the reaction of dehydration of an alcohol, the water has to be removed from the alcohol. The position of the equilibrium depends on the two reactions. The percent yield of the reaction was obtained from the following equation:

After the experiment was performed, the weight of the crystals was 27mg. Percent yield of the obtained crystals was 4%. Which showed a very large percent of the impurity of the product, because of the low percentage yield. DigiMelt showed a melting point result of 98.7°C-100.3°C and the range of 1.6°C. The high melting point range indicated that the product was impure. According to Jean-Claude Bradley Open Melting Point Dataset, the melting point of norborneol is 124°C, which is not similar to the melting point obtained in the experiment. The major difference could be due impurity, because the product did not had a dry substance, instead it appeared to have an oily texture.
