Synapomorphies Of Leopard Skates

Decent Essays
While leopard skates are typically not aggressive, if provoked in their search for food on the floor the skate will use its barbed tail in defense. The skate will strike with its tail much like a scorpion will strike its prey. Although this unique shape of the skate may seem odd it is one of the many unique synapomorphies of the order Batoidea. This order contains 600 species and 26 families. Along with flattened bodies, protruding cartilage, and an absent anal fin are major synapomorphies of this order. While this particular Batoidea species is equipped with sharp spikes on its back and tail other sister families have adopted different ways of presenting protruding cartilage. Sawfish are in a sister family to skates called, Pristidae.

It is at this point in the essay where examining the specific journal entries of Lewis, Clark and the known associates of the expedition help prove the question of whether or not the expedition was truly well prepared for their journey westward. Upon beginning their journey, Lewis was attentive as ever, “staying up till midnight, making observations every five minutes or so for an hour or more.” This was only practice, as the group was still making its way down the Ohio, and was often frustrating and impossible, but as seen in the journals, the expedition progressed. Maybe most particularly, research of the expedition could not be done without the journals, and it is the quality of the journals that show how the expedition was indeed prepared for what lay west of the Mississippi River. This can be seen through the writings of Lewis, who, as stated previously, was educated both by Jefferson and the educated elite of the country before departing.…

Crayfish are freshwater crustaceans that use their claws called chelipeds, for warning off predators. When frightened, these crayfish lift their chelipeds to make threatening gestures, all while moving backwards or staying still. We examined how long it would take for crayfish to calm down once removed from the water and if the temperature had any influence to this observation. To do this, we placed two crayfishes in room temperature water and another two in colder water for an interval of five minutes and again for ten minutes. Once the time was up,we measured how long it took for the crayfish to lower their claws.…
