Fences
A Fence is defined as a barrier enclosing or bordering a field, yard, etc., usually made of posts and wire or wood, used to prevent entrance, to confine, or to mark a boundary (Dictionary). Fences seems like a simple title but by the end of the novel you can see what extensive meaning it has. In the play "Fences" August Wilson shows how a simple object can have powerful meanings. One way the fence has a powerful meaning is the desire for protection. Throughout the play, readers see how fences are used to protect the characters. For Rose, the fence symbolizes her love for her family. She wants to keep the family together inside the fence. She also wants to keep the cruelty, injustice, and evils of the world outside of the fence. As long as the fence was up the family would stay together as one. However Troy and Cory thought the fence was a bad idea and they barely worked on finishing it. They didn't really understand what it represented to Rose. Troy is constantly trying to keep things out. You can see the difference between him and Rose. Bono on the other hand made sense of why Rose wanted the fence. Bono told Troy that Rose wants the fence to be built to protect her loved ones. He says, "Some people build fences to keep people out... and other people build fences to keep people in. Rose wants to hold on to you all. She loves you (Wilson 61). Bono really opened Troy's eyes by saying that. Troy now knew why the fence needed to be built. Bono also showed Troy that the fence can have the opposite effect, the Fence can keep people out but also keep people in. First it was racism and racial segregation that held Troy back from playing professional baseball. This was the major barrier in his life. The book was set in the 1950's and racism against African Americans was very common at the time. With this barrier in his life he couldn't pursue his dreams of playing in the big leagues. Another barrier Troy faced is his abusive father. Troy faced many setbacks because of his father. Troy picked up many negative things from him and Troy reincorporated it into his own
