A Little More Pleasure, A Little Less Sorrow The design choices for this project reveal a bittersweet symbol of chocolate in The Outsiders. Since all three Curtis boys cherish chocolate cake for breakfast only after the passing of their parents, it is reflected that they are attempting to cope with feelings of grief; it is their way of mourning. They try to view it as a positive aspect- if their parents are gone, they can consume as many slices of cake that they desire. However, the black utensils represent their true emotions about their parents’ demise. Black, by definition, is the absence of light.
