A large part of the island is the jungle which is used to represent death and evil. Since the jungle is the home of the “beast” it symbolizes the darkness present within them. This evil eventually spreads to almost every boy on the island, just as in the jungle "darkness poured out, submerging the ways between the trees till they were dim and strange as the bottom of the sea" (57). At one end of the island, where the plane carrying the boys crashed, there is a "long scar smashed into the jungle" (7). While the author does not include much description about the scar. The image of "broken trunks" with "jagged edges" is sufficient to give the reader an idea of the destruction caused to the island (8). This scar represents the destruction that any person is capable of causing. It can also be related to the harm the boys cause to one another which includes the deaths of three

One of the boys, Simon, states “...maybe there is a beast... What I mean is... maybe it’s only us.”…

William Golding’s Lord of the Flies writes about the ideas of people’s personalities and the evil within the human heart. Set within an island, a group of young boys set out to survive and be rescued; however, it is later seen how the boys end up being wild and savage when they’re left without adult supervision. Golding depicts Simon as a scapegoat whose exceptional persona on an island of chaos and anarchy makes him a target for the stranded boys’ hatred/evil. Starting early on in the novel, Simon shows a caring, generous personality, which becomes a stigma that he is “unique” in comparison to the other boys. Even though the norm for the biguns on the beach was to ignore or not help the littluns; Simon was different in that, “Simon found…

However, just because Simon is perceived as the beast does not mean that he is the one acting the most beastly, like in “Document F” when it states, “At once the crowd surged after it, poured down on the rock, leapt on to the beast, screamed, struck, bit, tore” (Doc. F). These actions show the savagery of the children even though they are not the beast. Although, the boys think they saw a beast, who was actually Simon, they still acted more savage than the so called “beast”. These actions of the boys towards the beast and in finding out what the real “beast” is show what the true nature of man is. Lord of the Flies is a book that shows what can happen to those who have been cradled by civilization, once they are devoid of all that comfort and left to fend for themselves.…

The novel The Lord Of The Flies by William Golding contains many forms of symbolism that help develop the storyline. In the beginning of the novel the little items that seem to be irrelevant end up majorly contributing to the story and having a great deal of significance. These components also show how the story wouldn 't have the same meaning or importance without their presence. The vestiges of civilization such as the conch, Piggy’s glasses, and their clothing are some of the most important items due to the fact that they develop and strengthen the storyline. When Ralph had the most power it was the time that he had possession of the conch, but when the conch was demolished Ralph was found with no power.…
