Next, Tim Johnson is another symbol that Harper Lee uses in her book. Through him, Harper Lee symbolizes the prejudice and racism of Maycomb County and Atticus is called upon to take care of both. Heck Tate says, “Take him, Mr. Finch” as he hands over the gun to Atticus (Lee 126). In a way, this is like when Judge Taylor chose Atticus to defend Tom. Both Judge Taylor and Tate know that Atticus only had ”. . . one shot” to take care of his duties but was the best person to do it (Lee 126). When Atticus takes care of Tim it is like he is fulfilling his job of defending Tom, however, he cannot rightfully defend him due to the deep racism in Maycomb, according to a comment on enotes (“What Is the Symbolism of the Dog?”).
