(The road to Mecca by Athol Furgard faber and faber edition)
In the play “The road to Mecca” by Athol Furgard is a character named Helen, also known as Miss Helen. In the play she creates her own Mecca in her yard. Mecca is a city in Saudi Arabia and it is a holy city to followers of Islam. People take this religious journey to deepen their experience with God. In this case Helen takes a spiritual journey and she does not physically go to Saudi Arabia but creates her own Mecca with visions or images in her head. On page 36 in the book, Helen said”I have to see them clearly first. On page 36 Helen and Elsa had a discussion about her Mecca if she is working on anything new, Elsa said “working in progress?” and Helen said “Not at the moment I haven’t managed to get started on anything since you were last her” in a sense I believe that her journey has ended and that she doesn’t see the pictures as clearly as she use to, she build her Mecca to fulfil her life spiritually, working on her Mecca everyday is her way going through a spiritual journey. On page 36 Helen explains about the pictures “I’ve told you before, Elsie, I have to see them clearly first. They’ve got to come to me inside like pictures. And if they don’t all I can do is wait… and hope they will”, and on page 37 Helen explains that her eye sight and her hands are not as good as it was before and she fears her inspiration and journey has came to an end “I have tried to patient with myself, but it’s hard. There isn’t all that much time left… and then my eyes … and then my hands… they’re not what it used to be. But the worst thing of all this is … suppose that I’m waiting for nothing, that there won’t be any more pictures inside every again, that this time I have reached the end? Oh God, no! Please no.
