Symbolism In Thank You Ma Am

Among the short stories that I have read, I chose “Thank you ma’m” by Langston Hughes. The author from this story have developed the protagonist Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones from negative to positive way. When I first read this story, I had a negative impression about Mrs. Jones because of her strong appearance and powerful actions. However, as the story goes on I got to know her real human nature.
An example for Mrs. Jones symbolism will be a bear. The moment when a bear look angry and strong may match with Mrs. Jones first impression from this short story. The words “power, courage and bravery” will attach with her character. However, also a bear image with the words “protection, motherhood and discernment” may correspond with attitudes toward Roger. An image of when the mother bear cares her baby bear warmly will fit with when Mrs. Jones care about Roger.
From the story a quote said “Mrs. Jones stopped, jerked him around in front of her, put a half-nelson about his neck, and continued to drag him up the street.” shows that she is not scared to grab the stranger who is Roger and also to bring him to her house. From this action, I don’t think this is an easy

Jones house, Roger and Mrs. Jones didn’t talk that much but she knows what he felt. Even though she understood what Roger have done, it still include as a crime. Therefore, it is a position where she can get mad at him. However, in the quote she said “Then she cut him half of her ten cent cake. Eat some more, son,” which shows that instead of getting angry she gives him some of her cake. Though the point of this quote is that it is the ten cent cake. This shows that she is a poor women but still she is nice enough to share it. If I was in the same circumstance, I wouldn’t give him my ten cent cake because since I am poor, just ten cent is an important and huge price for me. Nevertheless, Mrs. Jones warm hearted and unexpected kindness have allowed Roger to share a cake whatever reasons she

For instance, in “Good Man Is Hard to Find” she uses many different types of symbolism either related a general idea or a religious idea. “They passed a large cotton field with five or six graves fenced in the middle of it, like a small island” (O’Connor 712). This symbolizes that a tragic event is going to take place, due to the fact that there are six people in Bailey’s family, and there are six graves in the cotton field. This is also foreshadowing that keeps the readers engaged. Another symbolism in the story is “There was not a cloud in the sky nor any sun” (O’Connor 720).…
