Dimmesdale’s is “written in blood.”chpt16.30 The book does not explain how it got there, but in the book it says that Dimmesdale would go into a secret room and whip himself as a form of punishment. Maybe he did it to himself. Some have suggested that it became of its own. Pearl however, gathers her own theory saying "It is because, when the minister wrote his name in the book, the Black Man set his mark in that place?"chpt.16.32 Hester gets the scarlet letter and a baby, Dimmesdale gets a carved ‘A’ into his skin.
Another symbol from the book is, The Meteor. The meteor was a "natural phenomena that occurred with less regularity than the rise and set of sun and moon"chpt12 said by the Puritans. They believed it was a supernatural warning message sent from god about doom approaching. The meteor struck as Dimmesdale and Hester had an accidental meeting in the town square. Each were holding pearl and stepped onto the scaffold. Then the meteor shoots across the sky, so bright, it lit up the entire town square,"with a singularity of aspect that seemed to give another moral interpretation to the things of this world that they had ever borne before."chpt12.30 Dimmesdale believes it's a message from god about his own personal sin and his sin alone.
