Anthem is a deception of Ayn Rand’s point of view of her society. Ayn’s country was a collective society, where the council chooses how you live your life. This society worshiped the word “WE” because no one believes in individuality and how everyone is equal. In this Novella, Rand illustrates powerful symbolism and diction in order to zealously assert that collectivist society makes people lose sight of their individuality and their future.
Rand expresses the word symbolism to interact a word with a bigger meaning. The word LIGHT symbolizes Anthem. Light symbolizes Equality 7-2521 individualistic spark. As Rand says: “ When we closed the current of the wire, a spark of light appeared, and the beam of light flashed upon us” (Rand 59). One night, when Equality went to his secret tunnel, he had discovered something magnificent that no one had discovered in such a long period of time. This means that no one had the freedom to do what they chose to do. “ For the word WE must never come out of all human beings mouth, else it becomes the origin of all evils in the atmosphere” (Rand 96). “WE” must never be spoken because it's referring to oneself and in this society the council did not want people to think of themselves as individuals.
