In The novel A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini Mariam sacrifices her life for Laila and her children. This along with her kind attitude and love for children give off a strong image of Christ, even though she is in Afghanistan, a predominantly Muslim country.She loves Lailas kids and takes care of them as if they were her own. A Christ figure like her is needed in such a violent society to show that some people in her country are hand, and they are not all violent.

Afghanistan is mostly looked at as being so violent because of religion. Muslims are thought to all be violent, however Hosseini wanted to change people's perspective. We read about tragedies in the novel such as Rasheed saying “civilians were being killed daily” (235), and “women killing themselves daily out of fear of being raped” (253). They had unfair rules such as “all citizens must pray five times a day. If you are caught doing something other, you will be beaten” (277), however Mariam is shown as being kind and caring towards people. Khaled Hosseini wants us to understand that just because you live in Afghanistan you are not a bad person. He wants to change the stereotypes people think of when they hear about someone from Afghanistan. This job is perfect for Mariam. She was a kind, compassionate person who sacrifices her own life so that she could save the people that she loves. Khaled Hosseini shows that people in Afghanistan are humans too who love each other, he wants us to know they are humans too not just a bunch of murderers. Mariam was the Christ figure that was needed so that you could see through the life of someone in Afghanistan and not just the stories you hear about them.
