“A Dog’s Way Home” is a fictional story by Bobbie Pyron about a young girl named Abby, who loses dog Tam, in a car accident in the Blue Ridge Mountains in Virginia. Abby and Tam were inseparable and did everything together. Now that Tam is lost Abby is determined and is going to do whatever it takes to find him. But along the way, Abby encounters situations that slow her down from finding him. But luckily for Abby, her family and friends help her along the way.
The main characters are Abby, Tam, Abby’s Mama (Holly Whistler), Abby’s Daddy (Ian Whistler), Mrs. Ivy Calhoun, Olivia McButtars, Cheyenne Rivers, and Abby’s Meemaw (Agnes Whistler). Abby and Tam are loyal friends, stuck together like glue, and are each other's north star. …show more content…
If people didn’t have an identity or a name, we wouldn’t know who we are related or how many people are in this big world of ours. For Tam, this was the reality. When Tam’s crate flew from the back of the truck and into a river-the water began to rise and Tam had to escape. But when his escape from life and death came to an exciting point in time, he lost his name, who he belonged to, and all of himself. As he floated away-his collar dangled from the rusty wired crate door.
He didn’t believe that Tam was still alive, but when he read the bright yellow flyer, ”something nagged at the edge of Ian Whistler’s mind” (page 225). He removed the flyer from the bulletin board and stuffed it in his coat pocket. After a few weeks, past and Abby’s Daddy was back home, and his van needed tidying, Abby, and her Mama got to work. As Abby handed the garbage out to Mama, she saw a piece of bright yellow paper, but before she could grab it, in big black letters, she saw the words MISSING SHETLAND SHEEPDOG.“A chill ran from my toes all the way up to my scalp. My hands shook as I uncrumpled the paper. Just like in my dreams, I saw Tam” (page 267). After telling Mama and Daddy her Meemaw dialed the number on the flyer-not knowing if anyone would answer. This is important because this is what motivated Abby to keep looking and that Tam was still out
