The feeling of not belonging is a terrible one, throwing weight on shoulders and giving a sense of misery. The complete opposite of that, however, is feeling an otherworldly connection to something that is unknown, or perhaps something that is known. Though a connection can have benefits, sometimes a connection feels eerie and causes suspicion. Sometimes, a connection can feel like someone is watching every move, documenting each word and action in a way that seems foreboding and ominous. . Using a connection in literature can go both ways, it can give the reader a feeling of suspense or it could do the opposite. The author of “The Scarlet Ibis” used symbolism and irony to his advantage, enriching the story and further developing the plot.

The scarlet ibis showing up in the front yard of a North Carolinian home was completely unusual, and the scarlet ibis was outside of its place, its home, and its natural surroundings, dying because a tropical storm that had brought the bird in and pushed it to its limits (3). The bird was frail, overexerted by something that was beyond its power, something that it was not able to avoid and the very event that had caused its death. The ibis was outside of its place, not belonging in the place where it had lost its life and not belonging in the final days that it had spent on the earth. Much like the scarlet ibis, Doodle was outside of his place, not belonging in the setting he had been placed in and died because of something that was beyond his power and beyond persuasion of stopping (4). Doodle’s sibling had decided to leave him in the middle of a storm, weak and frail, and there was no way Doodle was going to be able to persuade him not to, much like the scarlet ibis being overwhelmed by the storm and being pushed to the absolute limit. Doodle and the scarlet ibis are alike because they both didn’t belong and died because of something outside of their power, and the brother and the tropical storm are similar because they had been the cause of a tragic
