In the play "Fences," the title, despite the simplicity, is very meaningful to the plot. During the majority of the play, Troy is tasked, by his wife Rose, with building a fence around their house. Even though there is only one fence, the title is called "Fences" because the fence is symbolized for many things. The fence represents different meanings because, Troy hesitates to build the fence, Rose wants the fence to keep her family together, and at the end Gabriel opens the gates (fence) of heaven.
Troy views the fence as keeping things out. He questions why Rose wants the fence built "Damn if I know either. What the hell she keeping out with it? She ain't got nothing nobody want." Troy neglects the fence like he neglects his family.
