How many times stories we have already read about physical, verbal and sexual abuse at work environment? What do you know about sweatshops and what they do in other countries? The name itself implies that these are companies involved with the extreme exploitation of workers, wherein a salary below the minimum necessary for survival, the absence of any form of security or labor protection; the exploitation of children, molestation and physical and psychological abuse. Several multinationals use this type of work to increase profits on the production. In addition, they use their influence to reduce labor rights (VOC). Global exchange wrote “To keep labor costs low, apparel shop owners usually pay workers a “piece rate” That means workers don’t get paid by the hour. Rather, their wage is based on the number of items – shirt, shoes, socks - they complete in a shift” (¶7). According to Global exchange “ In the grueling atmosphere of desperate cost-cutting by corporation, workers is accorded little value and, by extension, workers are afforded little dignity” (¶11). Abuses in the workplace pass the threshold. The simple fact is lives are being completely destroyed. According to Global Exchange “ Workplace injuries and exposure to toxic chemical also pose a daily risk to apparel workers. To prevent works from stealing the items they are producing, factories sometimes lock the plant’s doors and windows, creating a fire hazard. In many factories, workers are not given masks to put over theirs noses and mouths, exposing them to [dangerous glues or tiny cloth fibers that get stuck in the lungs]. (¶15). It is extreme bad to do that with people who depend on the job for a living. Many of these workers support their families. What person would not feel embarrassed having to go through humiliating situations such as this.
