Before I read the articles about Swales . I had no clue at all about what a discourse community was, but the idea once was known, was quite simple . A discourse community according to Swales, has six illistrative characteristics . First of all, a discourse community must have a common set of public goals. The community must also have various methods of communication between their members. These methods are used to give feedback and information to its members. Through out these methods of communicating ,there are specific lexis that are used to help describe anything a discourse community. The last way Swales stresses states " A discourse community has a treshold level of members with a sustainable degree …show more content…
If a player was directly to the right or left of another player on the field and wanted to make a pass, the player could simply scream "Square" and the ball carrier would know there was somebody ninety degrees to their right or left who was open and trying to get a pass. Instead of the members screaming "left" or "right " , "Square " is only used so people in the communtiy know what it is asked. In soccer , the key to winning in a match is for the players to already think of ahead for their next move. Another example of lexis in a soccer team is when a player calls for a "through ball " . This means a player is asking the player with the possession of the ball to pass it to the player with space and then receive it , instead of having to dribble through their defender to reach the same space. Lexis carries over from games into practices and meetings and also begins to take it to the right place in the vocabularies of the players. Once all the lexis are all known , it makes communication a lot more easier and understanable for the team to be faster and can positively make the outcome of the games by eliminating careless mistakes which could turn into a loss game.Besides using specfic lexis to communicate between each other , coaches and players use phone calls, e-mails,texts communicating their times of tournaments , scrimmages,practices and meetings to every player in the team.This technology makes it very easy to communicate and transfer information within the community. If a member of the community does not have a piece of information , it’s the players fault
