Suspense In W. F. Harvey's August Heat

Arguably one of the most popular types of genres in all stories would have to be horror, something about the way these types of stories make your heart race and leave you at the end of your seat with all of the suspense really appeal the many people. These types of stories usually do a really good job with messing people up mentally with them reflecting the fear’s that many people possess. Suspense is what really sets what a great horror story is and a perfect example of it would have to be W. F. Harvey’s August Heat which is about two men, who are completely strangers to one other, whose get a glimpse of the other's possible future which suggest that one of them will be murdered and the other will be charged for murdering him.

The use of foreshadowing is very prominent in the short story. Harvey does a great job at really keeping people off of their seat as they read his story. One way that Harvey uses foreshadowing is when our narrator James finishing his painting of a man who he has never seen before in a dock immediately after the judge has pronounced his sentence for something that he had done ironically enough he would soon meet that man whom …show more content…
Everything in the end was going rather well at first, our main character James was just waiting for the day to pass specifically one hour in order to be able to safely go back home and avoid the danger of potentially dying if that was even going to happen. Mr. Atkinson’s wife had already gone to bed and Atkinson was too busy sharpening his tools to even bother with James so everything seemed to be going rather well until James started getting affected by the heat and claimed that the heat heat was enough to make a person go mad which could be implied that Mr. Atkinson could potentially go mad and actually end up killing James in the process therefore going through with what destiny had in stored with
