Susan Moller Okin's Analysis

Susan Moller Okin believes the roles of each gender are not equal and explains in her book the many differences how men and women are treated. In a passage from her book, she indicated that women on average only earn 71% of what men earn (Chaffee 606). I agree that both women and men should be paid equally as long as the work they do is on the same level. If a woman performs a job just as well as a man in the same position, then there is no reason why she should be treated or paid any differently. I feel that all people should be paid based on their performance and experience no matter what their gender. All people deserve the opportunity to achieve what they want in life if they work hard enough for it.
Okin also mentions that just as

Isn’t it the ubiquitous interest for both men and women to get equal amount of pay if they have the same job and do the same task? Americans, in general, have been advocating the notion of equity between gender, stating that men and women should be treated equally and receive the same degree of benefits. This notion can be easily applied to the concept of liberalism and republicanism, which states that the government should protect individuals against arbitrary restraints and secure individuals’ interest. However, the reality is far different from these ideal expectations. According to a Pew Research Center analysis of median hourly earnings of both full- and part-time U.S. workers, “women earned 83% of what men earned in 2015” .…

On average women earn 77 cents for every dollar a man makes doing the same job (Sanders, 2015). Gender discrimination is not always toward women but there are also cases where men are discriminated against. For example, there was a time when being a server at a restaurant was considered a woman’s job. Today that line of work is open to anyone which is what caused the restaurant chain Ruby Tuesday to have to pay a $100,000 settlement. This happened when one of their restaurants in Park City, Utah refused to hire two men to be servers in the summer of 2013 (EEOC, 2015).…

Women choose what they do with their education, “while men were more likely to graduate from college in the 1960s and 1970s, since the 1990s, the majority of all undergraduate and graduate degrees have gone to women” (Stevenson). Women have the ability to get equal pay considering they have the education they need to go into the workforce, women aren’t applying themselves and don’t get equal pay as a result. To say women aren’t getting paid equally isn’t fair considering they are capable of choosing high paying jobs and working…

According to the article, “The Wage Gap 2014” in 2012 as full time workers, men made $854 per week while women only made $691, a gender wage ratio of 80.9 percent. The pay gap is larger than most people realize even with both a man and a woman having a college education. This has been an issue for America since 1868 and still is not resolved today. With women working the same jobs as men, it is only fair that they should be paid the same as the men working with them.…

At the end of the day, not being paid as much as a man for working in the same position is going to ultimately dent and hinder household incomes. With divorce rates being so high and single parent families seem to be always growing in numbers, such households are sadly losing out; there is a risk that those households could find themselves quickly falling into the poverty line, with no way of climbing out of it. This hardly seems fair! One thing I would also like to point out is the risk of going to extremes to hire women for certain positions, but who may not perform as well as males who could be more…
