Surgical Site Infection Prevention Essay

The introduction discussed the worldwide problem of surgical site infections (SSI) within acute care settings in European and American patients. The health care acquired infections (HAI) of interest focused on SSIs. Although all patients within the acute care settings were susceptible to HAI, the greatest risk was found with patients requiring intensive care stays. As a result of HAIs, patients had extended hospital stays and significantly added health care cost. More importantly, increases in patient mortality and morbidity were evident secondary to SSIs. With proper education, the number of SSIs can be reduced or prevented, as well as patient safety enhanced. Education should focus on enhancing patient care and the utilization of evidence- based guidelines into daily practice in intensive care units. The purpose was stated at the end of the introduction which addresses the need for analysis conduction prior to initiating the educational process. The analysis should target health care professionals’ knowledge of evidence-based measures for infection prevention. The methods section used a quantitative approach in achieving results for the analysis. Questions were directly focused and limited to SSIs on a large group of participants.
