In the article Supporting Secondary Readers, the author talks about the different strategies that the teachers use to support readers that are having trouble. According to the author, 8.7 million fourth through twelfth graders struggle to read their textbooks everyday while in school (Ness, 80). If the students cannot read their textbook, then it makes it real difficult for them to try and learn the material they are required to learn. A reason to support this is that the students will not be able to comprehend what they have read, because they are not able to read the information accurately. One of the best ways is cooperative learning. This is just basically when everyone works together to learn ways or strategies that could improve their reading. Another way is called graphic or semantic organizers. This is just when the reader can draw pictures so that he/she can understand what they have read by putting the events in order. In my opinion, both of these are strengths of this article because by me being a future educator, it gives us ways that we can help a reader that may be struggling. In my previous classes and in the first paragraph of this article, I learned that there are a great number of students that are struggling readers and they need help. This was a very interesting article. However, the only thing that could be considered a weakness is that most teachers limit their interventions because they believed it is time consuming to apply more intensive interventions. I think that teachers should be willing to go to the extra mile to makes sure that all their students are learning. If all the teachers engage in this tactic, there will be less students that are
