The most effective leaders are agile in managing changes with their organization by being thoughtful in their approach to the management of both the heads (information) and hearts (motivation) of people in their organizations. They do so through the sharing of information early and often in the decision-making process. The sharing of information early allows for trust, for inclusiveness and engagement in the understanding of goals associated with seizing opportunities and mitigating threats. Having diverse representation from within the organization’s most critically important positions helps leaders understand, and take advantage of, the diverse perspectives of the individuals and groups impacted by decisions. The benefit of this ensures the group is rewarded for working together (rather than rewarding individuals) based on the performance of the entire group. Developing and clearly outlining superordinate goals helps provide clarity around contingencies and consequences associated with rewards. Thorndale’s Law of Effect states "responses that produce a satisfying effect in a particular situation become more likely to occur again in that situation, and responses that produce a discomforting effect become less likely to occur again in that situation.” (Wikipedia contributors. As a result, performance can deliver desired results if individuals understand the reward they will receive for their positive behavior and effort. Expectancies associated with a reward linked to performance need to be stated early in the process. Depending on whether individuals are intrinsically or extrinsically motivated, everyone will have a clear understanding of expectations. Intrinsically motivated individuals will perform regardless of the monetary reward associated with their efforts.
