Theory Of Superiority

Improved Essays
Based on this theory, humor is used to generate a feeling of superiority over the target or butt of the joke whereby the butt loses face; therefore, it could contain disparagement and hostility. This view of humor is believed to be developed by Plato and Aristotle at the beginning (Reimann, 2010; Kochersberger, 2012). Since, Aristotle and Plato admitted that people got pleasure from others' misfortunes, inadequacies, and incapacities, because they were not suffering the same problems; in other words, they were in a superior position compared to individuals being ridiculed (Ermida, 2009; Palmer, 2003).
However, the philosopher Thomas Hobbes is known to be the founder of the superiority theory (Berger & Wildavsky, 1994; Dean, 2003; Ross, 2005).

The reasonability of this negative value judgment could be under question; because humiliating others with the purpose of gaining confirmation for oneself can be regarded as a 'sign of pusillanimity' (Palmer, 2003, p. 94). Besides, according to Hurley, Dennett, and Adams (2011), competitiveness was not the original function of humor. Attardo (1994) classifies superiority theory under the social theory of humor and states that, since superiority theory reflects a mixture of interpersonal and social aspects, this theory involves sociolinguistics of …show more content…
A: a knife has a point. or, Q: How do you know when a woman is about to say something smart?
A: When she starts her sentence with "A man once told me..." The second set, that is racist jokes, can best be illustrated by the examples of ethnic jokes, where traits such as stupidity or stinginess are ascribed to groups of people. Of course, in some cases these jokes do not directly target the individuals in a group; rather, they target specific characteristics ascribed to those groups, including their divergence from or violation of the mainstream beliefs of the dominant society. Davies (1982) explains how the groups at extreme ends such as 'stupid' and 'crafty-stingy' are both targets of jokes in industrial societies. In England, these jokes are made about Irish and Scottish people as the groups at two extremes:
Did you hear about the two Irish scientists who sent a rocket to the sun without any heat shields?
It was alright though; they sent it up at night. and Q: How do you know if a Scotsman is left-handed?
A: He keeps all his money in his right-hand

The present study investigated the possible relationship between self-defeating humor and the use of humor as a coping strategy. It also predicts that the use of humor as a coping strategy is negatively correlated with self-defeating humor Meaning, for example, if an individual has a lower self-defeating humor score, the lower the usage of humor as a coping strategy. However, the results of the present study do not support the idea of a negative correlation. Instead, there is a weak, but significant positive correlation between self-defeating humor and the use of humor as a coping strategy, rather than the negative correlation between the two measures.…

The stance that Alain de Botton took in his 2004 book, Stress Anxiety correctly addressed the goal of humorists and their effect on society. He states that humor is used, “ to convey with impunity messages that might be dangerous or impossible to state directly.” In other words, humor used as a means to address the elephant in the room without fear of repercussion. Effective humorists have the ability to prompt or sway a person’s opinion in a way that a politician's speech simply can not.…

Some subjects are considered dangerous or impossible to address formally or face to face. Therefore, that’s where humorists play a role. Alaine de Botton, author of “Status Anxiety,” believes that because humorists can say things that other people will not, they are there to convey messages that are too dangerous to state directly. Humorists, like ones on Saturday Night Live and in movies, use comedy and jokes to bring about difficult messages. Saturday Night Live (SNL) often uses satirical skits to convey a deeper message.…

That is what humor has become today. Sometimes, people resort to sarcasm; or, as others like to call it, scarcasm. Sarcasm has the ability to harm someone even though you’re ‘just joking’. Even though it may seem funny to you when you say, ‘no one likes you’, it may not be funny to the person who receives the so-called compliment. Another way to do such a thing is through political cartoons.…

Satire can be perceived in a cartoon illustrated by Carlson and literature source “The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County”, but to get the whole effect it is critical to understand the types of satire and their meaning. From the beginning of time, humans have always been teasing each other. Making snide remarks is a way of putting someone down without getting into a physical fight. In society today, using satire is a great way of accomplishing this. In satire, there are two main categories, juvenalian and horation.…

Research has even found that humor is beneficial to our health and that laughing can reduce people’s emotional and physical pain. However, the real question is: what makes things funny? In his TED talks speech, Peter McGraw answers this exact question by explaining his Benign Violation Theory to the audience. Overall, McGraw’s speech is effective in persuading his audience that his theory is valid because of his strong ethos factor, extensive use of logos, and his appeal to the audience’s pathos to explain his theory.…

Satire is one of the most powerful tools a writer has in his arsenal. Humor can level an uneven playing field, disarm an opposing argument, expose a jarring fallacy in the logic of an opponent. “A Letter to the Warner Brothers, by Groucho Marx, and “American Autumn”, by Mark Steyn, both demonstrate the wide ranging and potent effect highly developed satire can lend a text in achieving its purpose and reaching its audience. However, when you go beyond the surface value, there is an incredible difference - the reader can see the two individual faces of satire, the juvenalian and harsher horatian, peering out from behind the rhetoric of each text.…

During her interaction with the 11 other juries, two theories are demonstrated. I have chosen, an analysis of Carmen’s jury experience using Status Generalization theory, and Brewers model of perception. Overview of Status Generalization, written by Murray Webster, Jr and Martha Foshci, explains this theory as a social psychological process in which status characteristics of an individual affect cognitive and interactive conclusions in individual interaction. I usually find satisfaction when an example of comedic wit comes to light. The art of sarcasm, and the structure of satire have never ceased to amuse me. Although, when this specific brand of “humor” comes about, I sit back not to marvel at the thought or eloquence of the speech, but to restrain my own deeply rooted antipathy. When these graceless, crude masses shove their way into conversation, I watch in disdain as they merely beg for the attention of their audience. My muscles tense and cringe while my fingers curl reflecting my desire to retreat from an area so comically contaminated.…

“If the talent of ridicule were employed to laugh men out of vice and folly, it might be of some use to the world; but instead of this, we find that it is generally made use of to laugh men out of virtue and good sense, by attacking everything that is solemn and serious, decent and praise worthy in human life.” – Joseph Addison People today simply don’t understand. Those that do simply do not care. Those that both care and understand are not understood or cared for, which is one of the problems Joseph Addison brings across.…

Apuleius’ The Golden Ass and Juvenal’s Satires 3 and 4 use black humour as a leeway to express the seriousness of the situation through humiliation and dramatization in order to keep the audience entertained. Humour, especially black humour, which often involves a taste for the macabre, is used to make light of something that is considered serious or taboo. In The Golden Ass, black humour is used to illustrate Lucius’ trial where he is made a ridicule of in front of Hypata’s citizens for the festival of laughter enabling the audience to sympathize with him. Lamachus the bandit’s hand getting cut off in The Golden Ass is ironically humorous due to his intentions of robbery. In Juvenal’s Satires 3 and 4, Umbricius uses dramatization to ridicule…

“Jokes ease tension”(Khazan,114) comedians are able to capture the audience but does not guarantee that the audience will digest the issue in the way the comedian wanted. Many can argue that if humor eases tension then that promotes social change. In fact that is true but the outcome of how an individual might approach this can be negative thus no producing positive change. Humor is used as an outlet to address issues but can not make all views the same to an issue.
