Summary: The Naked Mole Rat

Improved Essays
The naked mole rat and the blind mole rat have developed unique anti-cancer mechanisms compared to other mammals. Mammals typically have several methods, such as inducing apoptosis, releasing cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitors (bound to CDK complexes) which signal cells to stop within a stage of the cell cycle, and contact inhibition in which cells stop growing once they make contact with each other. These mole rats’ distinct mechanisms modify contact inhibition and apoptosis to achieve the mole rats’ cancer resistance and longevity (Seluanov, et.al., 2009; Gorbunova, et.al., 2012).
The anti-cancer mechanism that the naked mole rat is the use of two types of contact inhibition. Humans and mice generally have one pathway for contact inhibition,

Abstract Li-Fraumeni syndrome is an inherited disorder and leads to the presentation of various types of cancer in a family. This experiment was conducted to determine first, based on Valerie’s family pedigree, if Li-Fraumeni syndrome is present in her family and who has been affected by it. Once this was established, gel electrophoresis was used to compare samples of Valerie’s blood and normal breast tissue to her tumor tissue and to a wild type DNA fragment to see whether or not her cancer has metastasized; it did not appear that this was the case. Lastly, her children’s p53 gene was sequenced and compared to the wild type p53 sequence to determine whether any of them carried the mutation. Two of her children do have the mutation at two points…

The simple but revolutionary organism Drosophila melanogaster has intricate properties that are studied to find its relations with human genes. Not only is D. melanogaster a model organism for its rapid growth, inexpensive culturing, and easy modifications, the Drosophila can provide more in-depth scientific analysis that can solve human diseases. The model organism D. melanogaster is studied to find ground-breaking research in neurology, sleep, cancer, and drug discovery. The multivariable effects in cancer can be studied by observing D. melanogaster because of its tumorigenesis caused by genes and its surrounding environment. The development of tumors in D. melanogaster is similar to the pathway of a tumor in a mammalian cell as it undergoes…

The naked mole rat is a very strange mammal for many many reasons. Mole rats run a monarchy in their colonies and the queen fights and claws her way up to the top, they are deemed completely immune to the cancer disease, and one of the strangest of all; naked mole rats don’t die of old age. That’s right naked mole rats are just as likely to die at age 1 as they are age 30. Rochelle Buffenstein has been studying naked mole rats for the past 30 years. She has recorded every birth date and every death date for every rat in her lab.…

Mammals, as in the various rodents depicted in the video Chisellers have adapted to fit the many different environments they reside in. There are about 1,300 different species of rats and mice making them the largest that exists to this day. They are equipped with ever growing cheek teeth that replace what has been ground away. One in such mammal depicted within the video was the Kangaroo Rat. They have a quite interesting form of locomotion where they hop much like a kangaroo.…

METHOD – 320 -6 = 314 WORDS Rats and Diets 36 Male Wistar rats were randomly divided into 4 groups of 9 rats with each group fed a different diet. Groups consisted of Corn starch (C), corn starch + naringin (N) (CN), high-carbohydrate high-fat diet (H) and H + N (HN) (Alam, Kauter, & Brown 2013). Rats on H and HN diet were fed a high-carbohydrate high-fat diet consisting of 25% fructose in drinking water and a mixture of beef tallow, condensed milk, powdered rat feed and salt for 16 weeks (Alam, Kauter, & Brown 2013). As a control, a separate group was given a high corn starch (C) diet, of corn starch and water (Alam, Kauter, & Brown 2013). Following the initial 8 weeks of the C and H diet, sub-groups of CN and HN rats had 1.6g naringin/kg…

UVB Light Source and Irradiation of Mice The dorsal skin of mice was shaved using clippers before exposure to UVB radiation. UVB (200 mJ/cm2) was administered per day, three days per week, from a bank of four UVB lamps (Daavlin, UVA/UVB Research Irradiation Unit, Bryan, OH). The irradiation unit was equipped with an electronic controller to regulate UVB dosage at the fixed distance of 24 cm from the lamps to the dorsal skin surface of the mice. Wavelengths 1 mm in diameter, that persisted for at least 2 weeks, were defined as tumors and recorded.…

The lateral border is convex while, the medial border is concave, indented hilus, and an upper and lower pole. The hilus and sides of the kidney of albino rat are surrounded by adipose tissue. Anatomically, the rat kidneys lay alongside the vertebral column in the abdominal cavity and suprarenal glands situated above their poles (David, 2000).…

CANCER ORIGINS There are two known naturally occurring cancers that are transmissible: Devil Facial Tumor Disease (DFTD) and Canine Transmissible Venereal Tumor (CTVT). Each of these first arose with a single individual as a result of low levels of genetic diversity (Grueber et al., 2011). Instead of having a normal life span, these clonal cells can live well past the life span of its host and cause DFTD in other devils. The transmission of the cancer in devils is thought to happen from direct inoculation of tumor cells when…

Commentary After reading H.P.Lovecraft’s The Rats in the Walls, I was inspired to write this trilogy of short horror stories. It was the ending sentence that fully made me want to write thrilling and intense short stories, “the rats they can never hear; the rats, the rats in the walls.” – (The Rats in the Walls). I used prose-fiction as my literary form for Didn’t I, Click and Answer.…

Lying within the core of the human brain is a small gland known as the pineal gland which is the principal conductor and regulator of the endocrine system. Furthermore, another essential process that the pineal gland undergoes is the secretion of melatonin, an autacoid hormone that controls the body’s circadian rhythm. Aside from controlling the body’s natural circadian rhythm, melatonin is used to cure many different conditions including radiation exposure, Alzheimer’s disease, and tinnitus. Also, Melatonin also regulates the rate at which humans age and how well our immune system responses to certain health conditions. Although melatonin has a broad range of functions within the human body, the pineal gland only secretes melatonin during…
