A new world, a new beginning
The beginning They began their voyage on December 6, 1606 which was funded by the Virginia company of London in hopes to have established a colony in Virginia. There were three ships known as Susan Constant, Godspeed, and Discovery which carried a total of 144 passengers. John Smith was the leader of the colony until he got “injured in an accidental gunpowder explosion in 1609, [which] forced [him] to return to England” (Foner 58). After his absence, the colony faced many more troubles. Tensions between the Native Indians and the settlers arose from absence of John Smith and conflict began in 1610.

The reason being that it had been one of the worst droughts of the millennium. Many settlers died from starvation and diseases in which they had not encountered in Europe. The disease included dysentery, an intestinal infection caused by drinking impure water, which was common for the area. Since they lived near a swap containing malaria-carrying mosquitos many of the settlers died. In addition, by throwing their garbage in the local river they caused contamination in their water source and made the conditions even worst for themselves even without knowing. Another disease included typhoid fever which caused diarrhea, vomiting, and headaches. Those were the two common diseases settlers encountered in Jamestown and did not expect.
