The gender pay gap has been a sexist issue across the nation for decades. Men and women do not receive the same pay causing issues for law makers and employers everywhere. There has been a Paycheck Fairness Act that has been passed by FLSA to provide equal pay between the sexes as of 2001 (Mikulski para. 3). The Paycheck Fairness Act, “has not been able to achieve its promise of closing the wage gap because of limited enforcement tools and inadequate remedies” continuing to cause controversy (ACLU, 2015, para. 2). Women receive less pay as they get older as well. Many factors go into the amount of pay an employee receives for the amount of work they do; gender, age, race, residency, and number of children plays a role in a workers wage. As a woman ages, her pay decreases. Throughout 40 years of working a female loses $431,000 due to the infamous pay gap (The top 10 facts about the Wage Gap, 1). Discrimination against women only continues throughout life. Women earn around 90% of what white men earn until the age of thirty five. After the age of thirty five women only earn roughly 75-85% of what a man performing the same job earns (The Simple Truth about Gender Pay Gap, 1). The National Committee on Pay Equality felt the issue needed to be recognized, so in 1996 the day was declared. Women earn a significant less amount than men they must work extra hours to catch up to their earnings. The median earnings for females are $36,931 compared to $47,715 for a male (Labaton, 1). The gender wage gap had decreased from the past but still has a long way to come so sexism is no longer an issue in the labor
