Today everyone is glued to their phones and it is no surprise the urge to pick up your phone in the most unappropriated situation is so common. It is a primary law in New Jersey and many other states, that the driver is prohibited from using any hand-held devices while driving. Nevertheless, people will continue to peek at their phone at any chance they get. Theoretically speaking, if an accident was to occur and the driver was texting the driver should be held liable for any resulting injuries or damages with sufficient evidence. However, if the sender of the message never sent the message to the driver, the driver would have never picked up the phone and caused an accident.…
According to the article, “Affluenza is it real?”, Ethan Couch, is being accused of killing four people while driving intoxicated. Although one would assume that he would be held accountable for his actions; the judge decided in favor of his defense, as he will not face any jail time. As a part of his defense, Couch’s attorneys claimed that Ethan was a victim of affluenza as he “was the product of wealthy, privileged parents” who never established any boundaries. If one were to take his position, they could use his socioeconomic background to their advantage by utilizing the psychoanalytic and behavioristic school of thoughts. For example, through the psychoanalytic school of thought, psychologists argue that people are affected by past events…
ROBBER BARONS Extremely large and powerful industries developed that were owned and dominated by a very small group of men. Four of these highly influential men were Cornelius Vanderbilt, Andrew Carnegie, John D. Rockefeller, and J.P. Morgan. With limited governmental regulation, many of these industries were able to evolve into monopolies and collude amongst themselves, an evolution that generated public outrage at the resulting unfair practices and inequalities. The industries countered the populist response by becoming more involved in politics. Cornelius Vanderbilt.…
As Industrialization fueled the monopolies of America, industrial capitalism came into its own. In the 1900s Progressive Movement, social problems reducing around industrial capitalist costs to go up and profits down. Kelsee Kessel 12/1/16 “ The rich get richer and the Poor get prison. “ The book “ The rich get richer and the poor get prison “ by Jeffrey Reiman and Paul Leighton is an attempt to give the reader a look into the criminal justice system that the media and American government doesn’t. It highlights the bias of criminal charges against the poor as opposed to the well off and claims that from even before the process of arrest, trial, and sentencing, the system is biased against the poor. The “American Dream” has been a central piece of ideology in American culture and history; the thought that any person, regardless of their background, could transcend their assigned socioeconomic class was among the most attractive reasons for coming to the new world. The transition from agrarianism (pre 1850) into industrialism (post 1850) changed the class structure from a relatively fixed one, making it easier for common workers to move their way up to the middle class. A more complex economy allowed them to take different career paths, and were rewarded based off merit rather than ownership. The same new economy allowed common workers to advocate for themselves where previously they could not. Although during these times there were several economic highs and lows, after the industrial revolution, intrinsic efforts from common workers to move into the middle class were more rewarded than they were previously.…
The Income and Wealth Inequality of America As a capitalist nation, the United State of America is facing a serious problem, which is the inequality of wealth and income. Why is that happening?…
Robert Reich, former Secretary of Labor and presenter of the documentary Inequality for All, once said “The faith that anyone could move from rags to riches - with enough guts and gumption, hard work and nose to the grindstone - was once at the core of the American Dream. Unfortunately today we know that this is no longer the case in the United States. The gap between the rich and the poor continues to increase as the rich get richer and the poor can’t get out of poverty. Contrary to popular belief this is not due to lack of hard work but due to a lack of opportunity and this has become a huge problem for the United States. Although we can’t have every person in this country be wealthy due to the system of capitalism, it is possible to decrease…
