Societal Influences of Salmon Consumption
The purpose of this paper is to examine the popularity of salmon and how the healthy eating food discourse plays an integral role as societal influences in shaping it as a food choice. As my heart disease and high blood pressure run in my family, I grew up in a household that ate healthy food and many of those meals were salmon – prepared steamed, baked, made into sushi or sashimi and sometimes smoked salmon as a breakfast food element. Beyond my family, it is well loved across the world and sought after. This paper will explore why people choose to consume and feature salmon in their meals

In a record looking to women’s health, the Ohio State University observed that women who had higher levels of omega-3 fatty acids in their blood experienced less hip fractures. Inflammation contributes to bone resorption, which is how bone tissue deteriorates (Laval University, 2007). Since salmon is one of the most omega-3 rich fish and it helps with inflammation and joint recovery, regular consumption of this delicious fish assists with maintaining the strength and health of bones. Neurologically, salmon is also excellent to maintain mental health as it can act as an antidepressant. In fact, studies have shown that long-term and regulated intake of omega-3 found in salmon fatty oils aids in the prevention of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease (Hooijmans, Pasker-de Jong, de Vries, Ritskes-Hoitinga, 2012). Interestingly, it also boosts the brain’s ability to cognitively recall memories and facts better, making it a superfood for students and kids as it can significantly improve one’s academic performance when consumed before …show more content…
