Summary Paco Underhill

Decent Essays
Shopping is one of the most defining characteristics of modern civilization, but author, Paco Underhill, argues that consumers may have a greater impact on the act of shopping than shopping has on them.
The book is divided into three parts. The first part describes the logistics of shopping more specifically, how people physically interact with the layout of a space, other people in the store, etc. The second part deals with how each demographic interacts with the shopping landscape. The third section of the book chronicles how shoppers respond to the placement of merchandise, packaging, and other features of the merchandise itself. The book is filled with interesting statistics based on studies performed by Paco Underhill and his company Envirosell.

In most household most shoppers will keep a list in their kitchen and whenever they will run out of a product or item they will write it on the list. Although, the list seems to expand as the customers walk, around the store to find what they came there to buy. Nestle uses “products”, “items”, and “merchandise” for the relationship of what the “consumer”, “customer”, or “shopper” will buy in the “supermarket”, “grocery store” or “The marketplace.” (Nestle, 2015, p. 496-504). Research says that “Most shoppers pick up two additional products for every item on the list” (Nestle, 2015, p.504).…

When looking at consumer’s choices, two of the concerns are ease of use and time. Drane specifically points out that mothers are arguably the main shoppers when it comes to food, as trying to find ways to keep the family fed and be time efficient. The faster pace that consumer’s live by today is not taken into consideration when looking at Moss’s article. Consumers have become more stagnant in their lives. Life styles are no longer active, everything has become automated.…

The standard way of thinking about packaging is that it is just a wrapper around an item. Contrary to the standard way of thinking, Thomas Hine believes that packaging reflects one’s lifestyle and values. In his essay “What’s In A Package”, he explains the complicated process of creating consumer packaging, which appeals to the consumer on a subconscious level. Because of this, consumers can realize the abundance of packages, the minute details that go into them, and how packaging can make or break sales. In this essay, I will be analyzing the minor details in the packaging of Caress Body Wash: Tahitian Renewal, AXE Harmony Body Wash, EcoSmart Instant Repellent, and Prince of Peace Ginger Candy to show the importance of packaging.…

    10) Placing men’s socks near the shoes or cash register creates a faster option for men instead of walking around the entire store for a single item, which can lead to frustration and a missed sale. 11) In recent years, women have become consumers in a different manner than their older counterparts. Following a rise of the contemporary consumer society in America in 1920s, the accompanying lifestyle choices have become aspired to and as a result have spread across the ocean to the rest of the world. Nevertheless, the origins of consumer society date back to 16th century; and the real development began following the industrial revolution, when higher production required swift and higher consumption and as a result an expanding middle and working class have transformed into consuming class, while previously only small elite enjoyed higher consumption pleasure (Goodwin et al., 2008; Ahuvia and Izberk-Bilgin, 2013). While the emergence of consumer society lead to the shopping experience becoming a massive leisure activity, it also brought a hedonistic ethos towards consumption (Ahuvia and Izberk-Bilgin, 2013). Thus, by the end of the 20th century it became apparent that the increasing turnover of commodities, as well as department…

Consumerism has become such an common and integral part of society that it’s importance is not even debated. However, the question of how it came to be so important is not as clear and there are many opinions on the root of its rise. Two authors discuss their opinions on the origin of shopping’s importance, and their arguments differ on whether the consumers or manufacturers caused the rise of the shopping era. Thomas Frank in “Commodify Your Dissent” states that manufacturers and retailers are putting out products that promote change, rebellion, and “out-of-the-box” thinking because those are societies ideals at present day. In “The Signs of Shopping,” Anne Norton argues that society has become free and individualistic due to manufactures…

In A Consumers' Republic: The Politics of Mass Consumption in Postwar America, author Lizabeth Cohen focuses on how the American culture of abundance and consumption influenced many political, socioeconomic and cultural changes in the decades proceeding the end of World War II. She argues that mass consumerism is deeply rooted in the modern American experience. Cohen first uses the prologue of A Consumers' Republic to introduce her own personal story, having grown up during the beginnings of the age of mass consumption. She claims that the purpose of including her personal story was not to demonstrate it's uniqueness, but instead insinuates that it was something along the lines of a common experience in the middle of the 20th century.…

By the time I make it to the end of the store, which is the clearance section, my mind just starts thinking of reasons or occasions that I could wear what ever clothing I end up wanting to purchase since its on sale. In the article The Science of Shopping, written by Malcolm Gladwell back in 1996; he talks about the secrets Paco Underhill develops on how people shop. The article states a wide variety of ways in how to get people to even think about going into the shop. After reading this editorial, I decided to observe the stores that I frequent to and was shocked on how many ideas are being used to this day to help stores with selling.…

The Butt-Brush Effect. Every customer has their area of own personal space. This is the area that if permeated causes shoppers to feel uncomfortable. Personal space transformed into a retail space suggests that when a buyer is bumped or jostled while exploring merchandise, they are likely to be uncomfortable, lose interest, and leave the zone. Underhill notes that “uncomfortable shoppers do not tarry; in fact, they often leave before buying even what they came for”.…

Price Jorgen Andersson, a former commercial director of H & M, described the pricing policy of the company in such a way: "I want people to feel free when they come to our stores, if, for example, tonight they want to go out and need a new blouse. They will not think twice about whether to buy something for 10 euros, because - to be fair - what is there to think about? It's so ridiculous price, if you want you can donate by tomorrow this blouse in favor of the Salvation Army, because this thing has cost you no more than two glasses of wine. " We are already familiar with H&M’s target customers, who are young women seeking for fashionable cloths at the low price. Therefore it is important for the retail to keep prices on the level they are…
