Willow Chance, a twelve year old girl, is a plant-loving genius. When she gets accused of cheating on an aced test, she is sent to see the school's counselor, Dell Duke. When she arrives, she meets two older kids, Mai and Quang-ha. She is dropped off at her house and discovers her parents have passed away in a car accident. She goes to foster care and temporarily lives with Mai's family. She passes out at the hospital and takes a taxi driven by Jario Hernandez. She continues to take this taxi every week on Wednesday. Mai's family lives in the small back room of her mom's nail salon. Once it comes time for the social workers to check out the living conditions, they move in to Dell Duke's apartment. Willow creates a garden in the apartment
