he streaming service juggernaut is so jam-packed with content, sometimes it takes a little help finding the diamonds in the rough. Luckily, we've got your back on this one, whatever genre you're into.
1. The Get Down
Set in 70s Bronx, The Get Down is a musical drama following a group of teenagers led by “Books” Figueroa (played by Justice Smith) and the rise of hip hop and disco. It's vibrant music along with a talented young cast complemented by some stunning cinematography throughout the series.

2. Peaky Blinders
Cillian Murphy stars as Tomas Shelby, leader of the Shelby family and the Peaky Blinders gang, in a post World War I England. The gang draws the unwanted attention of both the law and rival gangs in the country, while the cunning “Tommy” weaves his way through each of them. Stylish cinematography and powerful performances, Peaky Blinders is a great (and fairly dark) historical piece, loosely based on reality of course.

Shameless (US)
A remake of its British counterpart, the US version follows the dysfunctional Gallagher family, led by deadbeat dad Frank (William H. Macy) and oldest daughter/matriarch Fiona (Emmy Rossum). At times hilarious, depressing, and gravely dramatic, Shameless basically fits the “black comedy” label like a shoe. While the story line often takes leaps and bounds into the absurd, it's held together thanks to endearing performances by an excellent cast.

Great Job of John Erman’s Version of A Streetcar Named Desire John Erman had done a great job on filming the play, A Streetcar Named Desire written by Tennessee William, into movie, which was released in 1984. The classical music, lighting, and the representation by the actors were all blended together perfectly to express the play—I even think it is more engaged than the play. From the beginning to the end, Erman shortened scenes that are relatively insignificant to allow the main plots to “shine”.…

In Joshua Harmon’s scathingly funny play “Bad Jews,” opening at the Geffen Playhouse on June 17 (previews begin June 9), two cousins clash ferociously over who has the right to inherit the chai necklace that belonged to their beloved grandfather “Poppy,” which Poppy had preserved during the Holocaust by hiding the chai under his tongue. As the 20-somethings quarrel while sitting shivah for their late grandfather, they represent opposite poles of the modern Jewish experience: Daphna Feygenbaum (Molly Ephraim), born Diana, is an acerbic, self-righteous Vassar senior who has become obsessed with her heritage since visiting Israel and now is determined to study with a vegan female rabbi and to make aliyah. Her equally self-centered and condescending cousin, Liam Haber (Ari Brand), meanwhile, is a profoundly secular student of Asian culture who wants to propose to his non-Jewish girlfriend (Lili Fuller) by…

Every person has had a traumatic past or an unfortunate event that has affected them one way or another; all have a different way of coping, and for Tennessee Williams it was writing. One of his better known plays,“A Streetcar Named Desire”, is a play constructed of pieces of his past childhood. The play is constructed of symbolism, aggressive diction, and conflict to be as a stage for William’s broken, beaten down mind. Tennessee Williams was born in Columbus, Mississippi; he had two siblings and his mother and father- a full house. Though it may seem like he had a complete undamaged family, life wasn’t easy for him.…

An article was written by Michael J. Broyde, published by CNN, and titled “Transgender Bathroom Issue: A Solution?”, gives a synopsis of the issue of letting people go into the bathroom of their identified gender, rather than just their birth gender. The article opens by just explaining how that this topic got into the limelight when the supreme court took up a case of a high school student trying to use a boy’s bathroom, and whether or not that should be allowed (Broyde). Broyde then goes on to explain that in many religions, including his own, using the bathroom is seen as an extreme private time and shouldn’t be shared with anyone regardless of gender. Then, Broyde gives what he believes to be the best solution to this problem is to make…

When discussing the creation and implementation of the I-94 freeway women are often left out of the discussion. Likewise, when discussing the aftermath of I-94 the businesses that were lost are left out. In the play “The Highwaymen”, put on by History Theater, not a single women was in the play, and there was no resolution to the loss of Timothy Howard’s barber shop. Women played an instrumental role in the Freeway Revolt, but in the context of Rondo their roles in the community are not told and left out of the narrative surrounding I-94. Women represent the heart of many communities and by denying their stories to be shared an entire section of Rondo history is being lost.…

“A Christmas Story”, the play directed by Susan Ferley and performed at December 2nd, 2015, was a well-performed play in my opinion. The story is about a boy named Ralphie Parker wanting a BB gun: a Red Ryder Carbine Action 200-shot Range Model air rifle with a compass in the stock and "this thing which tells time" for his Christmas present. In the story, he does all he can to receive that gun but their parents reject his wish because they thought it was too dangerous for him. The writer, Jean Shepherd, wrote about a very boring outline of the story but made the story humorous and exciting for the audience. The performances in the “A Christmas Story” was very well done by the actors.…

Folklore are beliefs and ideas that are constantly changing throughout television or any source of media because Shameless was created by Paul Abbott, it is a comedy-drama remake based on the British series. The show centers on a dysfunctional family which consists of six siblings of Chicago, Illinois who struggle with their alcoholic father and estranged mother. Although many reality television shows exist to follow standard entertainment, Shameless can be argued as a modern folklore. The show, Shameless, is able to operate as folklore by qualities and characteristics presented in the show as the trickster, folk groups, motifs, and social context, but the main characters are archetypes of traditional hero which supports less validity of a…

The TV series Shameless is based on working class family that lives on the South Side of Chicago. The show is based off the dramatic and chaotic life of the Gallagher family. The family of six children depend on the oldest sister, Fiona, to take care of the family due to the absence of the mother and their incapable alcoholic father who comes and goes as he pleases. The unstable family has to cope with the struggles faced with little money and learn how to take care of themselves and also each other. In this paper, I claim that the show Shameless represents the stereotypical ideas of the poor class through the main character Frank Gallagher, for he is portrayed as a lazy, alcoholic father involved with criminal activities.…

    Play Critique Essay

As a person who has only attened two other plays in their life, people might call me “unqualified” to review a play; these people are wrong. My qualifications for play review come solely from an “excess” amount of musicals listened to, pirated videos, and animatics watched on youtube. Seeing Guys and Dolls live was a great experience as a whole, and I enjoyed myself throughly. Understandably there were a few things that I disagreed with, so I will nitpick and pretend that my qualifications alone make me justified to critique a play that no doubt took alot of effort, stress, and love to make.…
