One of the many ways hope is portrayed in the novel is with school. Arnold never gives up on school. He even shows this with imagery that he doesn't wanna be there on the first day of school when he says how the white people are almost transparent. He has to travel far for school every day and does this just so he can have a future and he never gives up on that. Most people on the reservation do not care about their future or the fact that they never will have a future if they keep drinking and acting recklessly. Again he uses imagery to show how angry Rowdy was “ Rowdy's eyes narrowed. His eyes always narrowed right before he beat the crap out of someone” (49). Arnold still always tries talking to him. He emails him all the time and makes effort to be his friend. He doesn't give up hope on their friendship because it's something that's important to him.
