The social, political and personal narratives of the times in which the paintings were made are expressed through visual arts, including histories from different regions. Portrait of a Lady Holding an Orange Blossom, constructed by Jeremias Schultz in the mid-18th century, and Rebellious Silence by Shirin Neshat in 1994 made in different centuries. Under the effect of different times, the perspective designs highlight the characters themselves. A study of the way both works use color, composition and line, reveals that the works present women’s situations and depict a deeper meaning related to their historical and cultural contexts.

Jeremias Schultz’s work depicts the values of the mid-18th century and expresses the cultural ideas of the time.

This is a striking black and white photograph. The image is of a woman’s face bisected by a black rifle, the hijab wraps the woman tightly and her eyes gaze intensely at the audience. This work uses visual representations of color and monochromatic contrast, as well as symmetry that can reflect the divisions caused by the Islamic Revolution. Neshat uses a monochromatic palette to highlight the black veil and gun in contrast to the white background. The symmetrical division of the woman’s face by the barrel of the gun also shows the division caused by guns and the inner conflict that cannot be told. The clear simple linework with straight and curved lines against the white background allows the viewer to focus on the figure itself, it also takes up over 50% of the entire work. The clear calligraphic text on the face is a silent form of expression of the defiance that follows the covering of her mouth. That’s the focus Neshat intentionally created.

The similarity between both paintings highlights the subject of the painting - woman, two background colors very blurred and dark, and the colors of the person stand out. Schultz uses bright tones to the person with light blue (see figure 1); Neshat uses contrasting colors (see figure 2).
