The resentment against Piero by some sparked violence that led to the attacks of Piero’s close associates. Piero’s leadership skills were questioned. People did not believe that Piero was fit to be the ruler of Florence. They saw him as a “boy” who only did what he wanted. The news of the agreement made by Piero with the king of France, King Charles VIII, angered the people. Piero agreed to give up “Florence’s two seaports, Pisa and Livorno, in addition to the surrender of it’s great frontier, and top-of-the-line fortresses in the north-west: Serezzana (Sarzana) and Pietrasanta” in addition to “a subsidy of 200,000 gold florins” as payment. The sea ports were to be under the control of King Charles as well as some land that was a part of Florence’s territory. By doing so, the dislike for Piero continued to grow and erupted. People could withstand Piero reconstructing the government with new staff members but the limit has been reached when he agreed to basically give up Florence’s trade routes and freedom of trade. Something needs to be changed. The citizens no longer wish to have Piero as their leader and so the fight unravels to get him out of his government position. He was a public figure that even the Pope was careful with how he was dealing with Savonarola. Although there were many enemies of Savonarola who wanted him dead, there were also many strong supporters for quite some time. Savonarola was a figure that divided the people of Italy. He had a strong influence one way or another. Savonarola was extremely religious and at some point when he started to say crazy things to refute the ridiculous rumors made about him by his enemies. His bold stance on many topics made him extremely radical to some but to others he spoke of the right issues. At times he does contradict himself where he teaches the belief of being a beggar and being humble yet at the same time he is sticking his nose in what is happening in government and how it should be structured. This clearly shows how connected politics is to with religion and how, more often than not, getting into politics can be risky
