This paper will utilize Wlodkowski’s Summary of Motivational Strategies to Design Instruction to evaluate the cosmetology course based upon the major motivational conditions. It will discuss the four major motivational conditions highlighted in Table 8.4 – inclusion, attitude, meaning, and competence. A revision of the cosmetology course will be included in the paper that will include the four major motivational conditions.
Inclusion
Students should be made part of the course from the very being; thus, the students will feel a sense of belonging. Inclusion is the first step to motivating students. In the cosmetology course, I have students to introduce themselves, tell why they chose the course and what they desire to accomplish after finishing

When the adult student is presented with the unknown, they tend to draw back and feel inadequate. They are encouraged from the start of the course to ask questions and not to be ashamed when they are not able to perform an assignment on the first try. They are given the opportunity to celebrate their success when they accomplish the task with their other classmates; thus, they are encouraged to continue to the next task. They control how long it takes them to complete a task; subsequently, this helps the student to effectively attribute their success to their capability, effort and knowledge (Merriam & Bierema, 2014). Attitude sets the stage for both the educator and adult students to attain their learning goals; therefore, it is vital that each course taught motivates the students to reach for the next level. The revision for the cosmetology course in the area of attitude includes the utilization of learning contracts, the K-W-L strategy to introduce new topics and concepts, and use the entry points suggested by multiple intelligences theory as ways of learning about a topic or concept (Merriam & Bierema, …show more content…
Students are open to new ideas and new techniques; therefore, the course is taught utilizing visits, internships, and service learning to raise awareness, provide practice, and embody the learning of concepts and skills in authentic settings (Merriam & Bierema, 2014). The course is presented with a degree of uncertainty, anticipation, and prediction that draws the student into a sense of security and “know how” when unfavorable situations present themselves (Merriam & Bierema, 2014). Humor, examples, analogies, metaphors and stories are a part of the instruction of cosmetology. Students are able to laugh at themselves and with the educator; consequently, the laughter allows them to absorb and remember more of what is being
