A spell is generally defined as a manipulation of one’s environment or situation through the use of chants, dances, tinctures (also referred to as potions), and other types of rituals. Spells are cast at certain times for effectiveness, often at night and outdoors. Men especially felt threatened by the use of spells, and felt that the more independent women were, the less they had to depend on the Church and therefore the men themselves (Ehrenreich, English 5). Men, more specifically priests often thought that witches gained their power through sodomy and intercourse with the Devil. Factors such as this made it dangerous to practice the Craft in the 16th…

Although the moon does possess some of the typical utopian traits the reader is not left with the sense that their society is actually perfect; this raises the question of whether or not Lucian’s Moonmen are actually supposed to represent a utopian world. Both cultures have distinctive characteristics which initially seem to remove them from reality and from humanity. The Sun-men are tall, inhumanly flexible, and possess forked tongues (Winston, 220.) The Sun-men of Iambulus represent a society that falls under the category of a Greek utopia and their noticeable anatomical peculiarities which can be seen as “improvements” on human physiology help to convey the perfection of the people and therefore their society (Winston, 223.)…

This week is important for you to know about because it is for people in the jewish community, and you, to reflect about all the bad you have done during the year and to think of ways to do better in the coming year. Following your week of self reflection the holiday of Yom Kippur brings the week to an end. Unlike Rosh Hashanah where you are judging all you have done wrong in the year, Yom Kippur is celebrated as a community and it is all about atonement for your wrongdoings.…

I have always imagined that there was more to the culture and history of Native Americans than just what I was taught in school; for that reason, In the Hands of the Great Spirit by Jake Page attracted me. Although I realized that a book about the twenty thousand year history of Native Americans would be like reading a textbook, which is not something I do during my free time, I considered the fact that I would actually learn more about a topic that is not “properly” taught in school. One of the biggest topics that I explored in this book was Native American culture; this is an aspect that I had never been taught anywhere else, but that Jake Page really illuminates with myths and pictures placed throughout the book. In addition to that, I…
