Ambrose Bierce established Peyton Farquhar as a sympathetic Confederacy supporter. In part II, a Confederate soldier visited Peyton’s plantation and discussed burning down the bridge and suggested that a civilian like Peyton should be the one to do it. After listening to the Confederate soldier, Peyton took it upon himself to proceed down to the bridge and accomplished the deed. The irony of the situation was that the Confederate soldier was actually a Federal scout. Therefore, the scout had lured Peyton to commit the crime.…

After reading “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge”, it does not seem that the author believes the answer to these questions are yes. In fact, Bierce conveys a harsh and vituperative attitude towards the military and war throughout the entire story.…

In the story, “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge”, Ambrose Bierce tells a story about a man named Peyton Farquhar and his tragic death. Personally I do feel some sympathy for Peyton for what happened but is was no one else’s fault but his own that he ended up hanging from a noose. I do not feel as bad because Peyton was warned about the soldiers and that any trespassers would be hung before attempting to approach the Owl Creek Bridge. I think he thought he was going to be able to get away with taking all or some of the driftwood located against the wooden pier against the end of the pier. Peyton ignores the warning and ends up exactly where the soldier told him he would, hung on a noose.…

Foreshadowing in this particular piece comes as a surprise when the ending is revealed and Farquhar is actually hanging. Bierce toys with the emotions of the reader all throughout the piece, when the answer to our questions should be in plain sight. Bierce adds, “Striking through the thoughts of his dear ones, was a sound he could neither ignore nor understand, a sharp, distinct, metallic percussion like the stroke of a blacksmith’s hammer.” (482) The sound he is hearing is his pocket watch which symbolizes his time running out.…

Justin Evans’ A Good and Happy Child and Stephen King’s The Shining both use the theme of uncertainty to say that things aren’t always what they seem. Rejection of Romanticism Writers of the late 19th century have reproduced life’s faithful representation of society through the literary movement of Realism. As a movement that portrays reality as closely as possible, writers purposefully denounce the previous literary movement of Romanticism. Romanticism is defined as “the predominance of imagination over reason and formal rules and over the sense of fact or the actual” (Holman). It is evident that Bierce, the author of An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge and Louisa May Alcott, the author of My Contraband reject Romanticism’s sense of idealism or optimism throughout their stories. Like other authors of the time period, both authors outline the truth of society and its “ugliness” that was initially…

Romanticism is the quality or state of being impractical or unrealistic, while Realism focuses in the realistic of life. Ambrose Bierce and W.D Howell campaign against romanticism in two of their important short stories: Bierce’s “Chickamauga” and Howell’s “Editha.” On the other hand, Mark Twain’s “The War-Prayer” rehearses and recasts a dynamic which we find operating in other texts that work to unmask the face of war. Moreover, Ambrose Bierce’s short story “Chickamauga,” a terrifying version of what we now call the “collateral damage” of war, is emblematic of how these stories expose war for what it is. Bierce’s aim in the story “Chickamauga,” is to explode romantic and naïve notions about war by showing the audience its brutal realities…
