Summary Of A & P By John Updike

A&P a short story written by John Updike in the early 1960’s was about a young teenager that turns against his manager over some girls and ends up losing his job. Historically in the 1960’s was the beginning of a new era where the young began to be rebellious against the normal day to day things. In the story “A&P” John Updike causes Sammy to turn against his manager due to the girl’s dress code in the store due to his managers view in politics. Sammy was attracted by 3 girls wearing bathing suits but he was mainly attracted to the leader of group of girls. It was weird for the girls to walk into the store in bathing suits because there was not a beach nearby. While the girls were shopping inside the store manager noticed the girls and didn’t confront them until they reached Sammy’s checkout line. Lengel the store manager tells the girls about the stores dress policy and then the girls are embarrassed. Sammy was not happy with that and later ends up having issues with his manager.
