Summary Of A Child Called It By Dave Pelzer

The book I chose to read was “A Child called it” by Dave Pelzer. It is the real- life story of the author Dave Pelzer from age 4 to 12. He was brutally beaten, starved and emotionally destroyed by his alcoholic mother. She played tortuous games that left him nearly dead. He had to learn how to play his mother’s game in order to survive because she no longer considered him a son or a boy, but an “it”. Even though Dave had two older brothers, his mother’s rage was solely directed towards him. I chose to read this book because child abuse is a very sincere issue in our society. Most people can’t fathom the thought of using violence against a child however, there are tens of thousands of children each year that are physically, sexually, and emotionally abused. David writing this book is giving a voice to millions of kids who were never rescued.

I personally have never experienced child abuse.I have had friends that shared their stories with me. For example, I had a friend in high school that was physically and emotionally abused by his father because he was too “feminine”. There can be various reasons on why child abuse occurs; it’s not always because of expectations or a drug or alcohol problem. It can also be related to stress, depression, or a mental health issue. What grasped my attention the most in this book was the countless bystanders. The fact that David's family could witness such cruelty without trying to put a stop to it is astounding.
