Summary: I Like Numbered Heads Together Strategies

Decent Essays
I like Numbered Heads Together strategy because it checks for comprehension by reviewing and discussing in a group the come up with an answer that the group agree on. In the group, each student will get a number. When the teacher calls that number the student with that number will answer for the group. I like this strategy because students get together and have a group discussion to come up with the answer. They are learning from one another as well as learning to collaborate. I find it to be engaging since everyone is involved in the group. Without this type of structural learning student engagement will be at a minimum not enhancing students learning skills.

Assignment 4 In Jean Anyon ’s essay “From Social Class and the Hidden Curriculum of Work,” she focuses on many schools whose curriculum have been carved out by social class. The lower the students families social class is the more repetitive and simple their curriculum will be, while on the other hand, the higher the social class is the more thought goes into the students coursework. Anyons basic point is that the work children are told and expected to do in school is the work that they will continue to do in their future jobs and careers. People, most often, do what they are taught to do.…

Modeling promotes learning and motivation and makes it easier to follow the steps that were demonstrated. Another instructional strategy that will also help with social interaction is group work. Less teacher-led and more small group activities allow students to practice language with their peers in a more personal manner. Students can learn a lot from their peers and may be more comfortable in a small group setting. If a student is still fairly new to a language then sometimes it is alright to pair them with a student who speaks the same native language.…

With two months of exploring and practicing the Core Intervention Model at Ellwood Elementary School in the city of Goleta, CA, I (Xiaowei Qi, University of California Santa Barbara) participated in three sessions, tutoring kids in kindergarten and students in the second and fifth grade. My supervisors were Amanda Sweigart (the fifth grade), Samantha Farver (the second grade), and Judith Quintero (kindergarten). Regarding the journals about my experience as a tutor, among the three sessions, fifth graders learn independently, quietly, and quickly. Almost all the students in this class worked hard with great participation and fully focused their attentions on the tasks.…

Throughout the year, 4th grade completes a few novel studies as a class. After observing and planning a novel study with my teacher for Because of Winn Dixie, I was able to plan one on my own. I developed a novel study unit for Number the Stars by Lois Lowry. I chose this book because of it’s difficulty level in order to challenge my students this late in the year. I also chose to use this book and create this unit to make connections to other standards and subject areas that the students are learning about this time of year.…

Philosophy of Literacy Literacy was once defined as the ability to read and write, however today is in every aspect of education. Without proper literacy instruction a student might be able to read and write, but he might not know how to properly understand new concepts and engage in advanced reading, writing, speaking, debating and listening. Teaching literacy should be included in Math, Science, History and even Art. For a teacher concepts are invaluable. They are what we teach, however literacy is how we teach it.…

Concurs with my Teaching Philosophy The importance of understanding days that are commemorated in Australia is discussed in the Humanities and Social Sciences (History) domain of the Australian Curriculum (AC). The curriculum for Year 3 stipulates students to look at days commemorated in Australia, such as Remembrance Day, its historical origins and the importance of symbols (ACARA, 2014a, ACHHK063). During this phase in my PLE I really thought the teacher focused on the InTASC #3 which is learner environment. I say this because the first thing she did was put the students into a group and then gave them a story to read, and after they read the story they had to collaborate with each of their group members to come up with a question. Then they have to share this with the class so everyone can learn from the question they asked. Once they are done with the questions they are supposed to come up with their own story, this ties in the critical thinking aspect of learning along with more collaboration with the group. After all the groups have worked on their books they are going to take turns going around and each group will read their…

The Direct Instruction Approach video shows instruction in action inside the classroom setting to teach words and is fast paced and fluid. The students verbally respond collectively and are individually checked occasionally by the teacher to demonstrate their knowledge. The teacher quickly corrects any mistakes and moves on with the corrections. This repetition is attributed to the success of the approach by a teacher. The video depicts a word being read at prompt of teacher, spelled out, and read again while the teacher taps out with each letter.…

In the article by Alfie “Getting teaching and learning wrong” it focused on how children are learning and the effectiveness of the way they are learning. As well as looking at the traditional ways of education and if that is the correct way for students to learn. When I read this article everything it said was correct because I as a student have gone through it. For example, when we’re taught at school there’s either a right answer or a wrong answer and your job is to find that right answer. Some of my teachers would give me information to learn it so I can pass the standardized tests.…

As I began reviewing literature on math talks, I came to find many terms that are synonymous with math talk. Math discussions, discourse, talk moves, and argumentation are among several terms I encountered. All of these, I found to have the same goal: to get all students involved. To give them opportunities to think, communicate, and reason their ideas.…
