Where would the world be if there weren’t people that helped fight for civil liberties and civil rights? One might say that white men would still be the only ones with opportunities in the United States because women and slaves would still be treated as property forced to do things they didn’t want to do. Americans have achieved goals expressed by the United States Constitution in some ways like fighting for civil rights, and civil liberties, yet there is still a long way to go in order for everyone to have equal opportunities in modern society. The equal protection clause, which is part of the fourteenth amendment has not fully reached its potential, the clause explains that everyone should be treated equally by the government but that is not the case. For instance, women have been granted a lot of opportunities and rights throughout time, but in this day and age they are still being discriminated mostly in their workplace with wages, benefits, job positions, and the ability to grow in their job. Women aren’t still the only ones being discriminated, the minorities and those in the gay community still have big disadvantages over Caucasian people. Caucasian people will always have better opportunities and more advantages over other races, and that is very clear to see. There are people in the white community that can admit it and say that they sometimes have it easier because of their race. A prime example that helps demonstrate this is what is happening in today’s events, race discrimination. Race discrimination is when two people of different races commit the same crime but one individual is convicted in a harsher way than the other, and it usually ends up being the one belonging to a minority. This has not only happened once, it has happened multiple times, and it has been shown in different media outlets which is why it is a good example to help show that there is still not equality amongst all races.
