Almost Home: Helping Kids Move from Homelessness to Hope by Kevin Ryan and Tina Kelley is a book about children becoming homeless because of home neglect emotionally or physically. It explains the problems they went through to cause them to be homeless, like violence, prostitution, teen pregnancy, and abandonment, and how going to the Covenant House and their mentors at the house gradually helped them prosper in being stable with themselves and society. The author wrote the book to help readers understand how home life greatly affects the young people in the family. Children are influenced by their social control agents like parents and guardians, so the worse the adults treat the them in the household the more negative effects there will be…
The documentary Bus 174 explores how Brazilian society’s treatment of their homeless youth and the lack of a well-trained police force led to the hijacking/ hostage incident of the titular bus. The perpetrator, Sandro Rosa Nascimento, was revealed to be one of the many youths who grew up on the streets of Brazil. Life as a street child was rough, with the lack of aid and the surplus of prejudice against them. It certainly did not help that the police were brutal towards all street kids – physically assaulting the children whether it be in the center of town or in subhuman prisons. Plagued by his strong desire to be seen rather than continue to be ignored by society, Sandro staged this horrid incident, and he basked in the attention.…

Some negative causes of homelessness include mental illnesses, gender inequality, effects on adolescents, and housing stability. It is extremely important for the homeless to be able to move forward rather than backwards, as many see the problem as worsening. According to Allender, Rector, and Warner, the priority nursing goal for people suffering from homelessness should be establishing criteria to help them develop abilities that will lead them to take advantage of opportunities and cultivate better life choices (2014, p. 834). Therefore, for an intervention to be successful, it should focus more heavily on prevention; and because of its acute characteristics, all forms of prevention should be included to counteract its prevalence (The Homeless Hub, 2017). In public health, three principal forms of prevention are being utilized to respond to community problems. While there are more than a few groups of people who experience homelessness in the United States and other parts of the world different ways, their homelessness is usually characterized by lack of stable housing coupled with extreme poverty (Henslin, 2013). I realized this after reading the author’s research concerning the homeless population in the United States. However, in my career as a human services professional, I would like to work with the mentally ill and the runaways. The mentally ill are people who’re rendered homeless upon discharge from mental hospitals, or rather persons with mental illnesses who become homeless due to lack of a family or lack of treatment for their problems. The first possible intervention that I would undertake…
